About Cottonwood (big Bend, Tx)

Cottonwood Campground is a quiet desert oasis in the southwestern corner of Big Bend National Park. Conveniently located between the Castolon Historic District, the scenic Santa Elena Canyon and the tail end of the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive, this small, 30-site campground is one of the least-known and quiet campgrounds in the park. There is one group campsite and 30 individual sites. This is a remote campground in a remote park. It is dry camping, no hook-ups, and no generators are permitted. There is not a fill or dump station, please come prepared. Cottonwood gets its name from the cottonwood trees that surround and provide shade for the facility nearby the Rio Grande. A general store and visitor center -- a converted former military outpost -- are also nearby. The campground is at an elevation of 1,900 ft. (580 m). It is relatively cool in the peak seasons of fall and winter due to cold air sinking into the lower elevations. In the spring and summer, this campground is very hot, with temperatures normally exceeding 100° F (38° C) from mid-March through August.

Nice campground, campsites are not too close together and #6 is level. The restrooms were very clean! Santa Elena Overlook and Santa Elena Trailhead both worth checking out. Chimneys Trail out ~2.5 miles (5 mi out & back) to the petroglyphs is cool!

This is my favorite campground. It’s kept immaculately clean, even the toilets which is hard since they are long drops. It’s so pretty and peaceful. The only negative is other campers let their dogs bark which scare the Javelina’s and Roadrunners away and breaks the peace. I really wish the National Parks would ban all pets or make a separate pet friendly campground. We are here to enjoy the wildlife and nature. Other than that it was wonderful.

Might be an all time favorite campground. Such peace and calm. Saw vermilion flycatchers. They even have recycling for propane canisters. It’s such an awesome beautiful drive to get here. And just a short drive further is called Santa Elena Canyon which is just like a postcard.

The reservation system needs repaired
Several sites were empty but the sign said campground was full. I stayed 2 nights but had to use 2 different sites, but the first site was empty the second night I was there and really didn’t need to change sites

Our stay at Cottonwood in Big Bend was fantastic. Within five minutes of our arrival we were completely surrounded by what Big Bend has to offer; uninhibited nature. Wild horses appeared just outside our door, quickly followed by a small group of Javelinas. Cottonwood on the Southwest side of the park was wonderful home base location to explore that side of the park.
