Our site, 003, had great views and a nice shelter. The site is big, but the parking space is on the small side. The camp host and our neighbors were very friendly. We had an excellent time and hope to return.

Camping at Chisos Basin feels less like “visiting nature” and more like accidentally pitching a tent in the private courtyard of an elite, horned HOA. The scenery is unreal—towering peaks, dramatic cliffs, sunsets that look aggressively Photoshopped—and absolute, suspicious calm. No wind. None. Nature just stood there… watching.
And watching back were the audad. Everywhere. On the rocks. On the trails. Casually blocking the road like they pay taxes here. These desert mountain goats stare directly into your soul, fully aware that this is their basin and you’re just a soft, snack-carrying tourist. They don’t charge. They don’t flinch. They judge. The campground itself is surprisingly civilized. Clean bathrooms, defined sites, and just enough infrastructure to lull you into thinking you’re in control—right up until an audad wanders through like it’s inspecting your life choices. Leave food out? Rookie mistake. Blink too long? That’s on you. At night, the silence is so deep you can hear your own thoughts, which is frankly rude. The stars explode overhead in a way that makes you reconsider every email you’ve ever sent. Sleep comes easily… until you remember you’re lying in a bowl of mountains with horned park managers roaming freely.
Final verdict: Chisos Basin Campground is peaceful, stunning, and lightly supervised by goat-shaped bouncers. Five stars. Would camp again. Would not challenge an audad to a staring contest.

The sites are well maintained but kind of close to eachother! It was beautiful and quiet. Would be nicer if there were shower facilities close or on site!

Hard to beat Chisos. Certainly going to miss it during the rebuild.

Beautiful campgrounds. Stunning views. Docked it a star because the dish-washing sink was quite gross

Site 32 was great. I know the basin shuts down May 1st. It would be really nice to up the fee from $6 to something higher and when the improvements are made, get some hot water in the facilities. Showers would be a bonus but at least hot water would allow some fast washcloth hot water clean ups. I don't think any other improvements are needed, but ad some electric water heaters in the bathrooms, and they need to have a very large capacity. Hope to make it down there again before you close up for improvements.
