We had an excellent visit to Big Bend and loved this campsite. It fit our 6-person family tent and grandpa's 2-person small tent, with room for the picnic table as well as all our chairs. Nice and level and not too rocky. The huge boulders were very fun for our kids (and us too, really) to climb on and get awesome views. The parking spot is a parallel spot and with our van there, the site felt very private and more isolated compared to some of the other sites. It's also near both restrooms (flush toilets, heaters, plus dishwashing sinks!) and a drinking water spigot. It was great December weather (60s during the day, 40s during the night) for us, the overall campsite was quiet and nice, and the hosts were attentive and available.
Our crew spanned ages from 4 to 65 and we did:
The Window hike (which starts just a few campsites away) - really beautiful, especially fun for our littlest who scrambling around the rocks and feeling like he was climbing a mountain. Very cool view to see across the whole park. Someone ahead of us spotted a black bear right off the path. Must-do hike if you're staying at Chisos.
Santa Elena canyon - a beautiful drive away, one of the coolest hikes we've ever done and full of spots to explore for the kids. Was warm enough that we waded across the river!
Mule Ears - we didn't finish this hike but it was cool and we saw a tarantula!
Lost Mine - great hike with awesome views.
We saw so many cool animals (coyote, deer, roadrunners, mexican jays) while we were driving around, so little tip to keep your eyes peeled! Finished our visit with a trip to at star party at McDonald Observatory in Fort Davis which was SO COOL, highly recommend adding that on (about 2 hours drive NW).

Good campground. Sites are kind of packed together. Close to the trailhead and excellent night skies. Strong winds and hard soil so bring good stakes.

Our site, 003, had great views and a nice shelter. The site is big, but the parking space is on the small side. The camp host and our neighbors were very friendly. We had an excellent time and hope to return.

The sites are well maintained but kind of close to eachother! It was beautiful and quiet. Would be nicer if there were shower facilities close or on site!

Camping at Chisos Basin feels less like “visiting nature” and more like accidentally pitching a tent in the private courtyard of an elite, horned HOA. The scenery is unreal—towering peaks, dramatic cliffs, sunsets that look aggressively Photoshopped—and absolute, suspicious calm. No wind. None. Nature just stood there… watching.
And watching back were the audad. Everywhere. On the rocks. On the trails. Casually blocking the road like they pay taxes here. These desert mountain goats stare directly into your soul, fully aware that this is their basin and you’re just a soft, snack-carrying tourist. They don’t charge. They don’t flinch. They judge. The campground itself is surprisingly civilized. Clean bathrooms, defined sites, and just enough infrastructure to lull you into thinking you’re in control—right up until an audad wanders through like it’s inspecting your life choices. Leave food out? Rookie mistake. Blink too long? That’s on you. At night, the silence is so deep you can hear your own thoughts, which is frankly rude. The stars explode overhead in a way that makes you reconsider every email you’ve ever sent. Sleep comes easily… until you remember you’re lying in a bowl of mountains with horned park managers roaming freely.
Final verdict: Chisos Basin Campground is peaceful, stunning, and lightly supervised by goat-shaped bouncers. Five stars. Would camp again. Would not challenge an audad to a staring contest.
