Chisos Basin camp sites vary greatly. So, if you can go online and view the sites, be sure to do that before making your selection. Some sites have nice shade trees, some have a brick palapa type of structure, some have both, some have none of those. I had made last-minute plans so I had no choice; literally got the last available sites for my dates.
Bottom line: It's a large campground so it's not going to be a really private experience during the spring. But everything worked and was well-maintained despite the recent staff cuts (may not have been in effect yet for my stay)

Wonderful campsite that's kind of secluded away compared to other sites. A close walk to the bathroom and water spouts. We had a picnic table, shade, and bear box.
We also got to see a bear from afar from this site! I had a wonderful time and I am so glad this site had shade as it got really hot during the day in May. Bathrooms were clean. No showers. Camp sinks available.

First, Big Bend National Park and the Chisos Basin are beautiful and well worth visiting. I've been coming here for many years. Just be aware that most of the camp sites in the Chisos campground are very small and close together. Most of them have very little space for parking anything but one vehicle. Site 16 is a good site and has better than average parking space for a small trailer (18' or less) plus a moderate sized tow vehicle. I managed to squeeze my 13' teardrop camper plus my Ford F250 truck into the parking spot, just barely. The other thing to be aware of with site 16 is that the parking spot is actually across the road from the covered picnic table and tent site. So the road splits the site. This was not an issue for me, but could be for some folks who don't want to haul a bunch of gear and tents across the road from their car. The good news is that the camping site itself has a nice shade structure over the picnic table and has good level ground next to it for a tent. The parking space across the road is fairly level for a trailer.

Beautiful camp ground surrounded by mountains and easy access to the best hikes. Fresh drinking water available at multiple locations. The camp host was courteous and helpful. The restrooms need an upgrade with addition of stall, shower, and improved maintenance/service. But overall the views during the day, the stargazing at night, and waking up to forest sounds were the highlight of our trip. Can’t wait to visit again once the renovation is done.

Our first time at big bend and we loved it! This spot was perfect for our family and the views were great! Neighbors didn’t feel too close to us.

There is no formal check in for camping… no campsite maps. The dish wash area between the men’s & womens bathroom has an unmarked door… The camp violations form says.. if dish wash area is available.. use it, instead of tossing grey water. The camp host pointed the dish wash station after I asked if there was one.

This campground is wondefully situated in a caldera; surrounded by mountains on all sides. It would be hard to find a better place to pitch your tent. Ground hard, come with a plan on how to get you tent pegs all the way in, as it gets very windy with next to no notice. Equally, a barrier of any kind, an old sleep mat, cardboard, doubled blanket, etc., between tent footprint and tent will increase comfort in the tent. Enjoy this magical place.
