About Chisos Basin Campground (Big Bend, TX)

Chisos Basin Campground, perched high in the rugged Chisos Mountains, is the most sought-after campground in Big Bend National Park. At an altitude of 5,400 ft. (1646 m), the campground is surrounded on all sides by tall, rocky cliffs and is conveniently located near some of the park's most spectacular and popular trails. This campground offers excellent views and mild temperatures. Also found in the Chisos Basin area is the Chisos Basin Visitor Center, the General Store and the Chisos Mountains Lodge, which houses the only restaurant in Big Bend National Park. Important: The road to the campground is steep and winding with sharp hairpin turns. Trailers over 19 feet and RVs over 24 feet are not recommended, and will not be accommodated. No RV parking is available at the group campground, nor is generator use allowed. All sites where you may have a generator are now reservable. If you need to use a generator and you do not have a reservation in a site that will allow generator use, you will need to camp elsewhere.  Note: Campsites are small, rocky, and not level, so there are very few sites truly suitable for RVs. Many sites will allow an RV/Trailer/Van/Camper, but you will not be able to get level. The campground is almost always full, and if the site you booked doesn’t work, in all likelihood you will NOT be able to switch sites, and will either have to make your site work, or find accommodations at another campground. It is necessary that you carry some form of leveling blocks/devices with you. Please carefully review the site details before making a reservation.

The last quarter moon made the Chisos basin like a fairy tale in the early morning hours. Do the South Rim!

A beautiful National Park. The campsites were meticulously kept. All the staff we interacted with were over the top friendly, including both volunteers and paid staff. We stayed in campsite 42 with a phenomenal view of the window. I am ready for another trip!

Campground and restrooms were clean. Be careful on the back country trails. High clearance 4x4 vehicle is truly necessary. Since campfires are not allowed, we brought a portable propane heater since it was pretty chilly, and we were tent camping.

Clean facilities and wonderful sites. Camp host was friendly and efficient; park rangers making regular appearances gave an appropriate sense of safety. Great first experience at the park!

Very nice stay at this campground! Clean restrooms, nice views, and the best trails of the big bend. We hiked the emory peak in 7 hours, and the window trail during the morning on the day that we left. I would 100% recommend this campground and hiking trails!

Great site. Somewhat private compared to others. Sun shade is a life saver in mid day heat. Easy access to water and toilets. In a shocking discovery for one of our crew who forgot a sleeping pad… the Texas ground is hard!!

We specially selected our campsite based on the criteria that we put into the app. We have an 18' camper and selected the site on the application based on its description as a site that would accommodate a 20' RV or smaller. When we arrived at the site it was immediately apparent that the site was not at all for RV camping but for tent camping, as was the site we had selected for following night (based on availability we knew we had to move during stay) and was not at all possible to camp via RV.

THANK GOD FOR MARK, the greatest camp host ever! Mark saw us struggling to try to figure out the situation and was able to help maneuver a solution to make it work. He was AWESOME!
We love Big Bend and we have tent camped and stayed there multiple times. Because of Mark the trip was rescued! But Rec.gov needs to revisit the classification of these sites as many of the ones that state they are RV accommodating are not.
Also, national parks really need to up their game and include shower facilities in the restrooms. Every State park in Texas includes them but not at the National parks. Just my two cents.

Probably the premier camping spot in TX. Area is small, not much privacy and the sites are crazy uneven. You don't even care when you look around you at those gorgeous mountains. And very helpful park hosts!

The view from the campground was phenomenal, right in the basin of the Chisos Mountains. The campground had a table with two benches and a small built in grill for a wood or charcoal and a designated parking space directly out front of the individual camp site. The weather was perfect!
