We needed a port in a storm, and randomly chose Potters Creek Park because it was near Golden-Cheeked Warbler habitat. Guadalupe State Park was our goal, but it was full. This park was only 30 miles away.
And it was a beauty of a park! I randomly chose a campsite, since there were no pictures or maps to show the actual sites & how they were treed. Our site was on a nice gentle hill with a beautiful view of the lower campsites (which were nearly all empty) and the reservoir (which looked to be 20+ feet below normal).
The campsite was clean. It had the facilities we wanted. It was relatively near the bathrooms/shower house, which were clean. Neighbors moved in and out, but all were quiet and courteous.
We had Black-Chinned Hummingbirds in our campsite, and we identified another 20 species inside the park as we sat & watched Nature from the site, or as we walked about. A pair of nesting Scissor-tailed Fly Catchers were a special treat to us (we live in Minnesota, and it's rare to get a Scissor-Tail up here).
Part of what made the experience positive was the sites were spaced far enough apart to achieve some privacy and enjoy quiet. As well as the park being less than half full when we stayed there. I can imagine it's jam-packed on a hot summer weekend.
Potters Creek Park forbids "day use", meaning transient fisherpeople, boaters, picnickers, etc. I believe that contributed to the positive experience we had.
But by forbidding day-use (people wishing to visit without staying overnight), some nice group facilities go without use. A lovely group picnic shelter can't be used unless it's rented by someone staying overnight. It seems a great waste.
I understand a new day-use only part of the park is being developed. But it's taking years longer than it ought.
Thank you for making this park available to us! In these days of political groups beating up Parks & their employees & their funding, we appreciate still being able to access a park & stay there.

This is a very nice park in an area that is close to many tourist sites/locations in the San Antonio area and around the park as well.
We were there for five days and enjoyed our site (75).
The only "minor issue" was with the men's restroom. One of the toilets appeared to be clogged but after checking with (reporting to) the front gate staff, it was a simple fix of holding down the flush button for an extended amount of time. NOTE...my wife made me aware that the women's restroom had a sign over it explaining the the button had to be pushed in for an extended amount of time to function correctly.
The showers worked well and the enclosure with a bench and towel hangers were nice and convenient.
We will definitely stay there again in the future and will recommend to others. Hopefully the lake will regain all/most of it's original capacity levels and will serve the people of that area and campers for a very long time.

Park is ok. Sites are spacious and well maintained. Bathrooms are in need of updates and repairs. Locking the gates so even campers can’t get back in after 9:00 is pretty weird.

We were so disappointed at the low lake level. The water edge is now 100 yards from the campground since our last visit.

- No one is allowed in the park unless they have a reservation or are a guest of a reservation. Before entering the park all reservation holders and their guests MUST check in with a gate attendant. You can not check in /drive in after the gates are locked each night. Speak with the gate attendants when you arrive so they can answer any questions you have about coming in after normal gate hours. If you are traveling to check in and know you will not arrive until after gate closing, know that you will NOT be able to access the park until the next morning when the gates open again. You may always leave the park after the main gate is locked, but will not be allowed to re-enter with a vehicle after the gates are locked. You may walk into your site, but the vehicle must be parked outside of the gate on the side, out of the way until the gate opens in the morning. You may NOT drive through the locked gates or attempt to reenter the park with a vehicle after you have left and the gates are locked. If the gate is locked when you return to the park, you may walk to your site after hours if you have already checked in earlier with the gate attendants. Anyone attempting to drive into the locked park after hours is subject to a citation, potentially punctured tires, and to pay for any damages you do to the gate(s) that are locked.

- No feeding the wildlife in the park. Do NOT attempt to interact with the wild life. Some are protective of their territory, homes, dens, food and young. If you encroach on their space, they may become aggressive. To keep you safe, we ask that you do not feed, pet, handle, chase, harass, follow, hunt or attempt in any form or fashion to attract or interact directly with the wild life. You may observe them from a distance. If you find a fawn or other baby animal by itself, do not handle them. Mother animals often leave their young in a 'safe' place so they can go off and eat. The mothers will be back for their young, but if you touch it, the mother will often abandon the baby since the animal now smells like you. Contact the gate attendants, park host or park ranger for assistance in any situation similar to what is described above. We will usually tell you to leave the naimal alone. Nature has a way of "fixing" what we perceive as an issue, when usually it is not. Game wardens and Park rangers can investigate if there is a serious problem like a rabid or injured animal.
