About Cougar Rock Group Campground

Cougar Rock Group Campground, on the southwest side of Mt. Rainier National Park, is conveniently located near Paradise. Group campsite reservations can be made on this page. Individual campsites are reservable via Cougar Rock Campground.  Paradise is the most popular destination in the park, with a lodge and visitor center, many miles of hiking trails and a commanding view of the mountain. The main attraction at Mount Rainier National Park is the mountain itself, a glacier-clad volcano of immense proportions. At 14,411 feet, it dominates the skyline for hundreds of miles. Visitors travel through majestic old-growth forest, past tumbling waterfalls and historic buildings to reach sub-alpine meadows, where world-famous wildflower displays are seen through July and August. Popular activities in the park include sight-seeing, hiking, rock climbing and camping. The Cougar Rock area is located at an elevation of 3,180 feet. Summers are dry and cool with daytime temperatures in the 60 to 80-degree range. Weather throughout the park can be variable, so visitors should come prepared.

What Guests Are Saying

Cougar Rock Group Campground offers a pleasant experience for families and groups, with ample space, good proximity to hiking trails, and a shaded walking path to Longmire. While some guests faced issues with group site reservations and a burn ban, many enjoyed the campground's atmosphere and the opportunity for exploration. Overall, it is a great spot for camping, especially when booked in advance.

This reservation system is terrible and a pain to use. The Rainier website and history tells us we can make group site reservations 1 year in advance, but this lame system does not allow that. Further, since this reservation system only allows 60 days in advance (or whatever the number is) you end up having to book the entire week of the dates you actually want in order to get the later days, with the intent of booking more days than needed up front and cancelling those you don't need at the start of period.

For over decade we could simply call Cougar Rock and reserve dates, but no more. Now, calling the campground has rangers telling us to call recreation.gov for more info, and the people we reach there tell us to call the campground to get more info. Lame and lamer.

Everything in life isn't made better by computers or a lack of human contact.

The group site at Cougar Rock was amazing! This was our first time booking one and we loved having all of our group in one site with plenty of space among ourselves and multiple picnic tables, a restroom close by, and lots of room for the kids to play too. We are planning to stay here again next year!

The group camp was wonderful. It was set off by itself. There were 3 or 4 tent sites that were flat. 5 cars could be parked there. Nice fire pit and lots of places to hang a hammock. Close to the paradise side of the mountain. Loved it and well worth the price.

The campsite is quiet and clean, with enough space for at least 8 tents, and also it’s the perfect location to go star watch on skyline tail at night.
