La Wis Wis Campground

The campground and facilities were clean and well maintained. It's a beautiful area. Our site: 11H

This campground is a real beauty. The physical setting is so gorgeous with the river running through and creating a lovely breeze. The rocky streambeds are great for exploring and create nice cold swimming holes. The camp host was super helpful and the general vibe was very chill and relaxed. I slept like a dream.

No privacy. Small, dusty campsites. Poorly maintained bathrooms. Reserved 4 days and bailed after 1. Total waste of time and money.

La Wis Wis campground amazed me! I would definitely recommend it for a night passing through, or as a base camp for exploring the SE and NE of Mount Rainier. I noticed the campsites had a lot of space between them, and plenty of water spigots and bathroom facilities (I was in loop D). The old growth forest was stunning; it felt primeval, even with a narrow one-lane paved path wending its way around. Packwood is eight miles away if you forget something (I did ;) . There are some short, family friendly trails from La Wis Wis (I think Ohanapecosh campground, which is close by in the park, has more trails for hiking from the campground).

There is a lot of beauty up the road: I drove up to Chinook Pass, which is maybe 18 mi to the west side junction, and then a can't miss 3.5 mi drive to the saddle. Steven's canyon (which has a lot of cool stuff) is even closer. And the Sunrise entrance isn't that far away, as I discovered one day with hardly any early morning traffic.

Great campground. A couple of loops have lovely narrow lanes. Though the campground appeared to be full, the traffic was not noticable. Most sites are spaced for privacy, though some are notably very private at all. Restrooms looked to have been replaced in recent years and were clean. Water faucets were close, though we could never find the gray water sinks. The only drawback was the fact that we could hear trucks on the highway (Hwy 12) as they applied their air brakes throughout the night.
Do look for websites that include photos of the campsites (e.g. https://www.campsitephotos.com/campground/wa/la-wis-wis) and examine them carefully for tent space. Some barely have room for a single 2p or 4p tent. Others could handle a family tent plus one or two smaller ones. Recreation.gov does not have photos posted for each site, so you have to find them yourself.
