Lena was a great host and the sites are nice and level. The four roads in are a mix of paved and gravel. All of them are very narrow in places and it would be hard to negotiate with oncoming vehicles if you are a wide Rv or travel trailer. We have a large truck and pull a 25 ft camper and felt lucky to not come across an other vehicle on the narrow parts of the roads. The roads are in generally decent shape but I donβt recommend a fifth wheel or travel trailer unless small like a teardrop or pop up style. Itβs doable butβ¦. Tents, class B or teardrop/ pop ups would have no problems.

We stayed at site 20 with our pop-up truckbed camper, and a friend with a tailgate tent on his SUV. He was able to back up to one of the tent pads while we had to level the front of our truck out in the driveway. But an incredible amount of space for three people and our two dogs. The grass was very well maintained and mowed and no trash to speak of. A welcome site to behold! The vault toilet was clean and just a short walk down the hill with trash receptacles right across the road.
We didn't spend any time at the lake...just hiking up on Spruce Knob. It's a slow drive on the dirt road to keep the dust down, but an easy ride if that's where you want to go. We'll 100% return to this site when we want some space to spread out!

We loved the quiet camping here, and the camp host has great photos for sale! Itβs a great area to hike with kids, too.

Spruce Knob Lake campground is wonderfully run, in a beautiful setting near to West Virginiaβs highest peak, and a great place to camp. The campground was impeccably clean, with the vault toilets well kept and the water potable and easy to get from your camp site. The camp sites are well spaced out, quite private and a good size. Will definitely be back!

The campsites are great and the campground host when I was there was very helpful. He gave me information about the Green Bank National Radio and Astronomy Observatory, to which I went and which I enjoyed. The cell service was questionable at all times and the roads were gravel and not fun to travel down.

It was not apparent to us when we picked Spruce Knob Lake Campground for a 1-night stay that it is at least 15 miles from the nearest paved roads to get there. We're accustomed to boondocking, but the steep, narrow, and windy National Forest gravel roads leading to/from this campground were difficult and a little scary for us pulling our 18-ft camper trailer. Nevertheless, our site was very private, and we enjoyed the quiet and beauty of the woods. We never made contact with the campground host/attendant to check in, but it didn't seem to matter.

Camp host was very friendly and welcoming. A tree fell across the one way road around the campground that was quickly cleaned up. Everyone there was really nice and the scenery is heavenly!
