This was a nice place to camp close to Mammoth Lakes. The sites weren't terribly private but it was quiet and clean. Our only complaint was that, for some sites (like ours #44), it was a looooong way to the bathroom. Not a problem during the day but not fun if you need to go during the night. You will be wide awake when you get back! As for Mammoth Lakes, we were 0 for 2 on restaurant choices until our son suggested Distant Brewing. That one was a winner!

Old Shady Rest is convenient, clean and quiet. We have enjoyed many trips and sometimes stayed for a week, sometimes just a couple of times. Spots are on the small side if you’re looking to bring an extended size trailer—expect the campground road to be a little tight and the approach to get your rig situated a little bit of a challenge.
When we parked within an hour or so got a friendly visit by the host who gave us our vehicle display note. He gave us a simple campground guide (do’s and dont’s) and cautioned us to read the part about bears and keeping our food carefully locked up in the provided beer lockers.
The week we were there (mid June 2023) it was raining off and on and the site flooded. We enjoyed the easy walking/biking trails that are right near the campground and walked over to the mammoth visitor center and Starbucks across the street. The spots where we usually stay have no hook ups and we don’t need them anyways. Both Shady Rest’s are good “go to” spots for a summertime home base in Mammoth.

Ant hills EVERYWHERE. worried about finding a 5'×5' patch to sit the dog or our chairs in. But, the bathrooms & host were nice, and the trees were gorgeous. More bears than i expected.

Nice, shady campground with good amenities (clean restrooms, water access). Couldn't locate a place to dump trash though. The camp host was friendly and also sells firewood bundles for $8. Fairly quiet area and set back off the main road a bit - I have camped here quite a few times over the years. It's a good location for heading off to your Mammoth Lakes adventures like fishing at Crowley or Convict Lake and Owens River or heading through town to Twin Lakes, Lake Mary, George and Horseshoe Lake or to the Mammoth Adventure Center, San Juoquin River/Rainbow Falls/Devil's Postpile area. Saw a few chipmunks and ground squirrels and several birds in the campground. We camped the very last week of the season and it looked like they were replacing the old wooden picnic tables with new picnic tables.
