We stayed in C Loop, and the sites are ROUGH. Most are either so small they can barely fit a small hatchback, or they are so uneven that if you are staying in a camper of some sort, you'll need some serious levelers.
The views of the lake are lovely, but without water or dump, combined with the less than ideal sites, we would much prefer to stay at Manzanita Lake and drive to other areas of the park.

The campsites are in the burn area of the Dixie fire. Tragic destruction of almost all the forest. No privacy at my campsite. The campground remains peaceful and quiet but its natural beauty has been ruined for generations. The trail around the lake does have a stunning view of Lassen peak reflected in the lake. Compared to overcrowded compounds elsewhere the tranquility is an advantage.

Campsites squeezed in and crowded together. LOTS of large healthy trees cut down to make space in the campground, yet firewood hard to get.
Recreation.gov maps not accurate.

Camping at South Summit was a good experience. Notices from booking website can be more emphatic in pointing out there is no water provided. Even non-potable water was not available to drown campfires. Sites are roomy but do not have vegetation between them so you can expect to make eye contact (and hear their conversation) with your neighbors on the regular.

Summit Lake South is a beautiful campground. We've camped here several times and are always happy to come back. The sites are pretty small but it's nice because that means it mostly limits how many people can come, keeping the experience pretty serene.
