The campground itself is great but please note that the trailer length is not accurate. I saw a review stating this and they said their 24' trailer wouldn't fit, so I thought we would be fine. We have a 12' teardrop and we really had to do some finagling to get it and our truck in. Along with that, there are bear boxes since you're in bear country but no where to dispose of dishwater. We were unsure of what to do so we drove to the North campground and dumped it there since they have a sink.

We had a fabulous July 4 weekend at Summit Lake South. The amenities were just as described.
The only drawback was that we had reserved two sites next to each other to accommodate our large family (E6 and E8), but someone had swapped the posts for E8 and E10, so one site was across the road and down a bit, and we were farther apart than originally intended.
This would have been fine except that E9 (which was then next to us) was very small with not-well-defined boundaries. That weekend's occupants had a LOT of gear and spilled into our space more than we would have wanted. Hopefully the rangers read this review and fix the posts so that the marked sites actually match where they're marked on the website.
All that aside, we had a great trip. Six of the 10 in our party made it to Lassen Peak with many photos and memories to bring home with us. We also hiked Kings Canyon and visited the Subway Cave and the mud pots. All were fairly handy from the campground.
The vault toilets were well maintained, and the water spigots were handily placed. There was NO cell coverage at the campground (and in the park in general), so folks should be prepared with printed reservations and maps.
