Loved our stay here, right on the water and for some reason the campground was nearly empty!

One of the quietest campgrounds with amazing sunrises we’ve ever been. Great place for stargazing. Close to lake and it makes it convenient for water activities. Only downside was the bugs, it was still a nice stay however.

I was unhappy that I had to reserve on line only because I had to drive back to town to reserve not even knowing it was available. Thankfully it hadn’t been reserved. I’m a senior and not very savvy with the internet. Also we like to just pick up and travel and don’t usually make reservations ahead of time. Depending on the weather is when we like to travel. Making a reservation ahead of time we are stuck in the rain or bad weather. We’re seniors and retired and can go at any time.

Many of the sites are not really level; plan accordingly. It's nice to have running water, flush toilets, and showers, though you might have a bit of a walk to get to them. The tap water has a faint odor of sulphur but this is not harmful. Considering the low elevation, the lake was relatively full compared to many in California, and the night skies were very clear and dark.

Could have just been unlucky when I visited but it was very hot and loud. Might be better another time of year. But it was close to I-5 and easy to find.

Well, part of the problem was it was a 100+ degree day. After the sun went down there were tons of bugs fliying around. The site listed flushing toilets and a shower - we never found the shower and the toilets closest to us were vault toilets. We stayed at site 57 - we later found that near site 46 was a flushing toilet, but it was apparently not cleaned very much as there were tons of spiders and mosquitoes in there (shouldn't the spiders be eating the mosquitoes?), plus a huge beetle in the men's urinal. Bug-loving nephew would've loved it. Couldn't find a decent map of the campground that showed where the showers were and which toilets were flushing (best map I found was https://www.spk.usace.army.mil/Portals/12/documents/Ops%20Updates/Black%20Butte%20Lake%20Campground%20Maps%202020.pdf?ver=p1ZJRuSyzUqoIpLZEswFtw%3D%3D). And to top it off there was a large party nearby playing some music and talking loud way past 10pm - fortunately, their playlist was not bad and pretty varied (some country, "Dance Monkey", "Head Over Heels", etc.), but that plus the heat made it hard to get to sleep.

This is a major boating reservoir, and I am not a boater. Car access to the shoreline means no vegetation of any kind along the shore. Bathrooms were a total mess, with all flush toilets that I saw (and I looked at too many) clogged and filthy.
