Sunset Campground (CA)

Spot 91- two options for your tent, one a bit close to the fire the other on the far side of the boulders. We went for the boulders. It’s a pretty good campsite, right in the edge of a steep slope. Good for exploring bigger kids, not so for tiny ones.

Tragically, there’s nowhere to hang a hammock at this particular site.

The light from the utility shed was a bit disruptive, but i’m very sensitive to light so you may not find it annoying.

The campgrounds overall were lively and well positioned to explore Grant Grove. Its a nice intro to the park. Less busy than Sequoias, and pretty accessible. Camp store was well stocked, and we enjoyed the visitor center and gift shop. The rangers there were helpful.

Unfortunately, there was no ranger on duty at Sunset and some campers had amplified music well past quiet hours. That was quite frustrating, but also something I’ve come to expect from campgrounds that are easy to get to.

Have fun! Oh- and rhe tandem parking is actually side by side so zero issue. I thought it was stacked which would be strange. Spot 89 is MASSIVE and spot 93 is very similar to 91. Would be a good option for friends who wanted to get neighboring sites.

We had a great time at this camp site. The views were absolutely beautiful. Our neighbors were pretty quiet and very friendly. The bathrooms were clean.

Great environment close to the General Grant tree

Even in the middle of the campground complex, I enjoyed myself, although I was looking for some kind of sunset being as that’s the name of the campground

I usually love Sunset Campground but not this time around. Upon check in, park ranger informed me that there had been noise issues the night before but he was only there until 7pm. So who is around to enforce quiet time?! Sure enough, I discovered that I was smack dab in the middle of a large group with several campsites. They were loud and playing music until about midnight. Quiet hours were a suggestion for these people. Also, there was a guy smoking marijuana nearby. Not a pleasant smell to inhale while eating dinner or breakfast.
Campsite 59 is on the smaller side but fine for one tent and space for a hammock. It has an individual parking space, so no sharing with your neighbor. The closest bathroom was a mess, which may be on account of the large party. The stalls are tiny.

Lovely campsit, unsurprisingly the sunset views were stunning. One note is that many of the sites are on a slope and finding a flat spot can be difficult, especially if you plan to have more than one tent. But all well worth it for the proximity to Grant Grove and ease of access to all the attractions of both Sequoia and Kings Canyon.

Rangers NEVER came by in the 4 days i was there. Other campsites were crazy loud and rowdy till 3-4am every night with nobody to report to or enforce rules. Restrooms were a mess for 3 of the days we were there and only 1 time were they cleaned. Campground is completely lawless
