About Buffalo Campground

Buffalo Campground is one of two facilities within the Buffalo Creek Recreation Area, about an hour's drive southwest of Denver, Colorado. Visitors enjoy a variety of recreational opportunities, including hiking, mountain biking and trout fishing.

The campground was quiet and beautiful. Road to get to it was narrow and curvy. The host was helpful and friendly, gave me a map and recommended a nice hike. Bring your own maps as there is no cell reception.

Checked in early Tuesday, left midday Thursday in mid June, 2024. The bad: Outhouses were never cleaned in spite of the host saying he cleans them daily as a part of his duties. No bear lockers in spite of warnings about bears. (A hiker we met on the Colorado Trail said he saw a black bear about four miles from the campground.) Fee was high considering there was no water. Do not stay in sites 1 through 6 if you have a dog. They are close to the host who has three huskies that may make your dog nervous. The good: several very good hiking and biking trails less than a quarter mile away, including the Colorado trail. Good shade. Good fire rings and picnic tables. Most sites have level parking for camper vans.

It was a great experience! The sites looked pretty close together where we were (site 22), but was perfect for us since there were no other campers around. The camp host was friendly and readily available, and the site/bathrooms were clean and well maintained. There is absolutely no cell service so you'll need to go for a drive until you get a bar or two. We will definitely be back!

From Denver, travel southwest on Highway 285. Turn south on Jefferson County Road 126 and travel 15 mi. Turn right on Forest Road 550 and drive 5 mi to the campground.

Buffalo Campground is accessible via Highway 285, which is approximately 15 miles to the north. Jefferson County Road 126 provides access from Highway 285 to the campground.

Policies & Rules

Cancellation policy

  • Reservation fees are non-refundable. For campsites, cabins, lookouts, yurts, group sites, and similar stays, we charge a reservation service fee of $8.
  • Standard cancellations usually have a $10 cancellation fee. Customers can generally cancel before the check-in date online.
  • Late cancellation rules differ by stay type.
    • Individual campsites: cancelling after 12:00am local time the day before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • Cabins, lookouts, and yurts: cancelling less than 14 days before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
  • Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
  • Early departures may or may not be refunded. At certain facilities, partial refunds may be possible if staff can mark the site available for other visitors. No refund is given for a night if the early departure is requested after that day's check-out time.
  • Security deposits are separate. Security deposits may be refunded to the original payment method if the facility is left in acceptable condition, as determined by the property.
