I would definitely recommend for people to make the drive to Grand Lake, such a neat place.

The campground is large but the fir trees between each campsite allow lots of privacy.

The camp site was great and the area is beautiful. However, The bear proof bear box was in adequate for the number of campsites served. Plus they were hidden by the trees. The ranger said we need to protect the bears but then the facilities made it very difficult to meet their demands.

Although the website said full, there were at least 12 empty campsites. Roughly 100 elk in field right down the road. Camp host friendly and helpful.

The good: A herd of elk came by the campground a few times and you can hear them calling nearby, too. Right near the banks of the upper Colorado River. Great view of the mountains. Really close to trails on the western side of the RMNP.
The not so good: The biting black flies - they are bad for several hours each day and even 100% DEET didn't deter them from biting. There is some road noise in the day (not at night, though) as the campground is right on hwy 34. New trees are growing and are large shrub sized but the sites are pretty much all in the sun with no shade.

Nice area, you may want to consider mosquito netting as they are thick around the marsh\river.
