About Baby Doe

Baby Doe Campground is situated on the eastern shore of Turquoise Lake in the shade of a lodgepole pine and subalpine fir forest. This family-friendly campground is a popular summer destination for boating, hiking and fishing. The campground was named for Elizabeth McCourt, whose nickname was Baby Doe. She made a name for herself in the Colorado mining community in the 19th century when she took on the rugged work of a miner.

The campsite was good and camp hosts were great. The water and the dump stations were out of service when we arrived. Water tanks were installed toward the end of our stay but not having the dump stations in service was very inconvenient. We had to drive into Leadville to dump on two occasions. The host were not sure when the dump stations would be back in service.

Booking a campsite at Baby Doe was fraught with angst this year due to a Recreation.gov website glitch, according to the Camp Host info provided upon our arrival. Fortunately, the Camp Host was able to offer us another campsite for our 5 nights of uninterrupted camping, not requiring us to move campsites as we anticipated due to the erroneous 'FIFO' Friday restrictions we experienced on the website. The only problem was that the alternative site had a big dip in the back-in driveway resulting in us scraping our RV stairs, even with Camp Host assistance in backing in our 30 foot travel trailer. Once we were settled in, however, we had a great time fishing & hiking, enjoying Turquoise Lake. Thank You, Camp Host, Roy for your assistance!

Do be aware that the water spickets and dump stations are currently closed at the campground, however. So you need to fill up your RV in Leadville, prior to arriving at the campground. There is a temporary large plastic container for 5 gal fill ups at the campground, but no RV tank fill up.
