About Father Dyer

Father Dyer Campground is situated on the eastern shore of Turquoise Lake in the shade of a lodgepole pine and subalpine fir forest. The family-friendly campground is a popular summer destination for boating, hiking and fishing. The campground is named after Father John Lewis Dyer, one of the first Methodist ministers to tour Colorado's high country mining camps. For 20 years, beginning in 1862, he travelled the circuit encompassing Alma, Fairplay and Leadville, regularly skiing over the 13,186-foot Mosquito Pass on long, wooden skis.

I booked this neck of the woods to escape the summer heat and boy did it deliver! It was cold at night and got warmish in the day for a little while (in the 30's at night and low 60's with wind in the daytime). It was never warm enough for us to swim in the lake and the wind seemed to blow pretty hard across that water making it tough to paddle board. The campgrounds were very quiet and clean. The host was friendly. There was a trail (by campsite 17) to walk over to the road that goes to the day-use area by the lake. Lots of tall pines all over the campgrounds, so not much of a view, but has that great feeling of being in the woods. We got pretty good cell service (Google Fi). The Leadville 100 race was going on when we camped and we got to watch the runners go by the lake. The lake has some nice sandy-ish areas with small rocks that my 3 year old loved to dig into with his trucks. I wouldn't go here without expecting cold temperatures (layers!!!) and planning carefully for the time of year. We loved it!

Father Dyer has some of the best campsites I’ve ever been to. Large camp spots, the cleanest bathrooms ever, helpful can host and great location close to town and easy walk to Turquoise Lake. Looking forward to getting back ASAP.

This was our first time staying at this campground and we liked it a lot. The camp host was very friendly and helpful. We will definitely return. We struggled a bit getting our 30’ trAiler into our site due to rocks that had been placed across the road. You need to consider how someone will back there trailer into a site before placing rocks somewhere.

Nice campground, would only have been nicer if the rv dump was working to save that hassle.

I would give it 5 stars because of the host who is absolutely amazing and keeps everything so clean! But the lack of any kind of restrictions on what kind of generator can be used lowers the score. Maybe whoever makes the rules should spend an evening next to people with the loudest generator I ever heard and they would change some rules. It’s a shame that you’re going for some piece and quiet to the remote area just to find yourself in a generator land.

Clean, friendly and a great family location. Best campground at Turquoise Lake. Marsha, the campground host, simply the best ever. Also James, the campground host at Tabor Campground is also wonderful. They have made our stays this summer great as usual.
