About Father Dyer

Father Dyer Campground is situated on the eastern shore of Turquoise Lake in the shade of a lodgepole pine and subalpine fir forest. The family-friendly campground is a popular summer destination for boating, hiking and fishing. The campground is named after Father John Lewis Dyer, one of the first Methodist ministers to tour Colorado's high country mining camps. For 20 years, beginning in 1862, he travelled the circuit encompassing Alma, Fairplay and Leadville, regularly skiing over the 13,186-foot Mosquito Pass on long, wooden skis.

We have camped at Father Dyer for many years. We can get to the lake easily and we loved being in the trees. Marsha, the host, is wonderful. She is very nice and makes sure that people follow the rules. The bathrooms are always very clean. Our kids love to go to town and down to the lake.

Very nice campsites spaced apart so you don’t feel you’re in a crowd. Plentiful trash bins and clean restrooms. Also, easy access to the lake.

Beautiful quiet campground with plenty of shade and privacy. The lake is just a short 5-10 min walk from the campground. It was mid June and I was concerned about mosquitoes. We did see a few, but with the bug spray on they didn’t touch us. Also, there is plenty to do and see in nearby Leadville.

Good weather with just enough wind to help keep the mosquitos at bay. Campground host does an exceptional job at keeping camping sites and facilities clean.

It is a very nice campground and the bathrooms are maintained better than some. The firewood is a bit steep ($), but perhaps that is like everything else right now. Our biggest disappointment was that this campground allows RVs, so be prepared for generators constantly ruining the peace of the natural forest if you stay here. There were several running at one time producing a significant amount of noise pollution, more that what we have in the suburbs of Denver! We will probably not return here for that reason.

Campsite was very nice and clean. The host was courteous and they cleaned the bathroom frequently throughout the day. The Turquoise Lake area is very nice and we hiked around the lake.
