The campsite itself and the surrounding area was beautiful. However, when we got there there was no water available even though it was advertised as having them. Apparently a snow plow broke the water main. We were never informed of this prior to coming to the campsite. So thankfully the camp host had a large water container that he shared water with us for dishes but it was not potable. He did also give us a gallon of water. We then had to go back into town, 1.5 hours each way, to go get drinking water. The tent pad on site 1 was definitely on the smaller side and I was not able to set up my 8 person tent fully as the floor space was not enough. The absolute WORST thing was the mosquitos. I have been camping all over Colorado and in Florida and I have only had one other experience that was this bad. It was like literal clouds of mosquitos and it didn't matter the time of day. I had to use deep woods off and even then if I missed a spot they found it, not matter how small. Before you think it was this bad because of the nearby lakes, I have camped at several other spots on lakes and it was not even close to this bad. I even camped once at the lakefront campground in Steamboat Springs, which is about 3 hours away, and had zero problems with mosquitos. Again the scenery was great, but I definitely will not be back.

Loved this campground at Trappers Lake! Shepherd’s Rim is a reservable campground which we like. Sites 5-8 are awesome-all with a view. Unfortunately, during our stay around June 12, there was no water. Probably fixed by now. The campground host was friendly and helpful. I’d go back for sure.

Camp host was great, very friendly, third time and enjoy that area very much a lot of great hikes. Only bad part is it is very difficult to get to the lake if you wanted to do some paddle board or inflatable kayaks.

This campground is well kept and the campground host is always willing to help out with information and service. Also love that it is a designated wilderness area. No ATVs, no mountain bikes on trails, no motors on the lake and plenty of great hiking trails.

If you like a place without lots of UTV's, this is it! Quiet, peaceful, off-the-grid sorta place. Cell signal is available about 20 minutes down the road, otherwise you're disconnected! Tim, our host, does a great job. Fly fished and caught small brookies in the pond near Horse Thief CG. We didn't see it, but Tim said there was a moose spotted nearby before we arrived. They did have a threaded water spigot available by the host site. Great place - we'll be back!

The campground was great except for those pesky mosquitos. the camp host went above and beyond to make sure your visit was great. The bathrooms are the best I have ever seen at a high country campground. Keep up the good work
