About Zapata Falls Campground

A short drive up the gravel road that leads to the Bureau of Land Management’s Zapata Falls Campground (CG) will let visitors to the area see the San Luis Valley and Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve from a whole new perspective. The campground offers bird’s-eye views of the valley floor below, the San Juan Mountains to the west, the adjacent Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, and several 14er’s and many other towering peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Mountain range that Zapata Falls CG sits on — not to mention spectacular sunrises, sunsets and night skies!   Zapata Falls CG has 23 single campsites, 1 group site and 1 camp host site nestled among piñon pines along two one-mile long loops. The sites on one loop are designed for tent campers. Parking spurs on the second loop vary a little in length but in general can handle RVs, towed campers, or other configurations of vehicles up to about 50 feet long.   A new trailhead in the campground supplies a link to the South Zapata Creek Trail and the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness. A second trail, next door to the campground in the day-use area, leads visitors on a mildly steep half-mile hike to Zapata Falls, which gives the campground its name.

Post covid, we've finally seen the return of camp attendants and it shows. First visit to the "pit" bathrooms was different than in the past couple of years. I had to laugh with a pleasant surprise, as I saw the attendants had folded the toilet paper in the bathrooms with a point, as in fancy hotel rooms. Haha. The bathrooms were clean, the facilities were well attended, and the road to Zapata Falls Campground was heaven, compared to the past "wheel-crushing" experience. Down side - the chip and seal road gives new visitors access to the campground and the day traffic has increase exponentially. Camping experience was amazing at this campground, which gives some of the best sunset views in the west.

Fantastic views. Easy walk to the falls. Clean vault toilets. Great place. I just wish the RV slot had a little more room for a tent as well.

Campsite was right next to Zapata Falls trailhead. Trailhead itself was super crowded, campground was much quieter. All sites were full but people were respectful about noise and spread out enough that we had a little privacy. Super convenient location for going to Sand Dunes as well. The road around campground is not paved, but will be fine for most cars. A few massive dips/potholes that could give smaller cars some trouble though. Would stay here again if I was in the area.

It was a terrible drive to and through the campsite. I chose not to stay there.

We stayed in site 4 and had family in site 12. There were plenty of tent spots in site 4. Both sites had great views of the valley and sunsets, but site 12's view was astounding. It was a quick walk to the Zapata Falls hike. It was nice to have the fire ring, picnic table, and bear bins to store our food. The trash was kept emptied and the bathrooms were clean. All of the sites were spaced pretty well so we weren't right next to other sites.

We would definitely stay here again.

Great views and the spaces are large enough for longer RV's (our is 28').

Camped here with my husband and toddler as well as the grandparents. We had a beautiful sunset view and loved the hike to Zapata Falls. Our camp site was extremely rocky and on a slight slope. We had two tents and there was only one flat area. The second tent area was small so we ended up borrowing the tent site from the RV site behind us. The pit toilet was very clean and actually smelled fine. One complaint is that someone was blasting music until after midnight. Camp host should have been more attentive to that. Nice bear box, fire ring and picnic table. We will definitely be back.
