About Zapata Falls Campground

A short drive up the gravel road that leads to the Bureau of Land Management’s Zapata Falls Campground (CG) will let visitors to the area see the San Luis Valley and Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve from a whole new perspective. The campground offers bird’s-eye views of the valley floor below, the San Juan Mountains to the west, the adjacent Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, and several 14er’s and many other towering peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Mountain range that Zapata Falls CG sits on — not to mention spectacular sunrises, sunsets and night skies!   Zapata Falls CG has 23 single campsites, 1 group site and 1 camp host site nestled among piñon pines along two one-mile long loops. The sites on one loop are designed for tent campers. Parking spurs on the second loop vary a little in length but in general can handle RVs, towed campers, or other configurations of vehicles up to about 50 feet long.   A new trailhead in the campground supplies a link to the South Zapata Creek Trail and the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness. A second trail, next door to the campground in the day-use area, leads visitors on a mildly steep half-mile hike to Zapata Falls, which gives the campground its name.

A lot of people have commented about how bad the 3 mile road up to the campground is and we were worried about this but as of 10June2022 they have regraded the road and there are no larger rocks/boulders that would keep you from going up or make it a rough 30-60 min drive. At it's worst there are some dips in the road and washboards but all cars were going up with ease including accords, imprezza, minivan, civic, etc. It took about 10 min to get up going 20mph.

As far as the sites, we stayed at #9, tent site, which is great. Very large area, not really any neighbors, some trees. All sites have bear boxes. Only downside is the knats & flies are the worst I've experienced. Screened canopy highly recommend and some sort of fly catcher. Oh and the heat is brutal out here. Bathrooms are pretty far away from #9. Good luck.

Host is very diligent going around keeping everything up to date.

Minus 1 star due to plague level knats, no water on the campgrounds, and bathrooms can be quite the trek depending on your site but are clean. Otherwise a great campground (KOA tried to charge me $20 to fill up my 5 gallon jug - bring lots of water!).

The campground was great! Our site was spacious enough for our 8-person tent and then some. We had a beautiful sunset across the dunes as well. The 4-mile drive in is gravel and has some uneven areas, but we traversed it just fine in the minivan so no concerns there. We arrived at sundown so the host checked in with us the following day, nice guy!

Great campground hosts, clean campsites and facilities. Very close to Great Sand Dunes NP. No water, so be sure to bring what you need.

Bathrooms were very clean and the host was friendly and helpful. Our campsite was clean and there was a nice amount of shade and spacing between sites. The road construction was a bit of a hinderance and we were held up on a couple of occasions, but knew before we arrived that there was work being done and also realize that a hinderance now means a better road later.

Great camp. Would be nice to have water, but facilities were clean. Our site did not have a great place for a large family tent, so it was a little slanted in the tent.

We were at tent #9, very spacious camp site with designated areas for all your camping needs! The bathroom was a little far but thankfully we didn't have to get up to go in the middle of the night. Very clean, camp host was nice. Beautiful view of the stars on a moonless night.

Beautiful views from every site... the campground is high up. It was very windy when we were there.
