Due to the fires I guess the campsites were very exposed and dusty. We had to leave after first night because tent was full of blowing dust and Ashe. Very bad for myself and my children’s health to be exposed to blowing dust especially while sleeping. Entire campground should be closed during these windy dusty periods. In addition the campsite felt neglected. Branches and sticks from bushes were sticking way into walk ways and catching clothes and faces. A really unfortunate experience as I really enjoyed my precious 2 stays over the last 20 years.

All trails are clearly marked and laid out. Just stunning views of the canyon. Park rangers and visitor center staff was very, very helpful. It is all a "must see." Our first time to this park and won't be our last!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
We had an amazing stay at the campground at Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Even though the area was impacted by last year’s fire, the campground is in great condition, clean, peaceful, and clearly well cared for.
What made the visit even more special was seeing the landscape coming back to life. New growth is appearing everywhere, the views are still absolutely breathtaking, and the whole place has a powerful feeling of recovery and resilience.
The park staff have done a great job keeping the area welcoming and beautiful. If you’re thinking about visiting, don’t hesitate. Black Canyon is still incredible, and seeing nature rebuild itself makes the experience even more meaningful.
We will definitely be back.

Campsites are small, bathroom is just a toilet, no sink.

Getting There
The park is located approximately 250 mi (249.8 mi) southwest of Denver. The South Rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is 15 mi (14.9 mi) east of Montrose, CO, via U.S. Hwy 50 and CO Hwy 347.
Highway access
The campground is accessible via U.S. Highway 50 and Colorado Highway 347, located approximately 15 miles west of Montrose, CO.

- There are no water hookups or dump station at South Rim Campground.
- Cell phone reception is unreliable in the area.
- Bears frequent the area; all food must be kept in approved containers
- This is a high elevation facility (8,000 feet/2438m). Learn how to "Take it Easy at Altitude" and more on the park's Safety web page.
- Weather varies greatly from the canyon rim to the canyon floor; bring appropriate clothing
- Generator use is not permitted.
- There is NO wood collection or firewood sales in the park. Don't Move Firewood : Help protect our forests! Prevent the spread of tree-killing pests by obtaining firewood near your destination and burning it on-site. Moving firewood is illegal in some states.
