Black Canyon of the Gunnison South Rim Campground

Campground was great, as was the site. Plenty of room even if you have a large tent. Has its own picnic table, fire ring and bear box. It is a little bit of a walk to the bathroom which is a pit toilet with hand sanitizer. There was a little bit of shade at the site but not until later in the afternoon/evening.
I highly recommend the scenic drive and overlooks, big horn sheep have been spotted in the mornings/evenings, and sunset view held true to its name. Don’t attempt east portal road unless you are familiar with using a low gear, it’s 16% grade. Be sure to check out the ranger programs.

So clean area and campground

Great spot to access the South Rim Road, where there is a lot to see. You can also hike from the campground to the South Rim Visitor Center. Our campsite was shady for part of the day, a big plus. Water was available in the campground which we needed to access both days. A sweet spot!

The area is gorgeous and you can easily spend 3 to 5 days there hiking and looking at the sites. The only thing I’d recommend is that you bring your own toilet paper because the whole time we were there the bathroom wasn’t cleaned and there was no toilet paper. The camping spaces are nice. They are just close to others so there isn’t much privacy. I look forward to going again.

Great campground but no view of the surrounding area. Also, would have preferred a site with electricity, but they were not available due to recent closures.

Very cute campsite! Clear place to put the tent (though sloped a bit, but not extremely) and privacy between campsites provided by small bushes/trees. Honestly, camping here has become my go-to way to enjoy Black Canyon of the Gunnison.

Great campgrounds, was very peaceful. Was so glad I was able to get a reservation.

It’s very easy to navigate the campground. Cleaned bathroom, bear locker boxes are bigger than expected, and super helpful when putting necessities away. Very quiet at night, and absolutely wonderful weather when I went. I’m excited to camp here again.

Our van was not able to utilize the space. The trees were grown over the gravel so much we would have been in the street. We left the park early and headed for another campsite. We were looking forward to sunset and sunrise views…it was not meant to be. We loved the park and appreciate all that the Rangers and staff do!
