Black Canyon of the Gunnison South Rim Campground

Pros: There’s lots of shade and you’re already inside the park so you definitely don’t need to drive far to do the park things. There is also a trail leading to the visitor’s center that’s gorgeous in the morning. The wildflowers were beautiful. I suggest taking the little road just off the entrance that goes down into the canyon to the river. It’s super windy and a 16% grade but worth the anxiety.

Cons: Spots are tiny and there’s virtually no privacy. I have a 21 ft wolf pup and couldn’t pull in because our neighbor had a larger rig and his truck. I had to knock on their door to ask them to move their truck at 10pm when we arrived.

Camp sites are very private. The land is beautiful and enjoyed the lookouts

A very nice small campground. We loved the secluded feeling staying in the park, even though we were only 20 minutes out from Montrose. There is minimal shade available at sites which made the hot afternoon tough, but there are many great trails to do that weave between the campgrounds the visitor center, and the canyon rim.

Such a beautiful park! We do the hike to the bottom of the canyon. So glad we did. But it was one of the toughest we have ever done.

Overall a nice experience at Black Canyon. But, in the campground, if you have a big rig you will have trouble. Check the site sizes carefully when you book. We arrived during rain and the campsite was a muddy mess. We could not level the trailer as it just sank in the mud. The sites are dirt without gravel or pavement. If the sites had gravel or road base that would help in a situation like we ran into. Sites are small and very close together. Campers around us were courteous and quiet but we could hear larger groups with kids in the other loops. Not a bad experience but not the greatest either. It seems to be that the national parks were made for smaller cars and smaller rigs when they were built. The scenic drive was pleasant but missed about half of the pullout views because of lack of parking. Try in the shoulder seasons when kids are in school.

Variety of hiking options for different abilities. We were able to hike to and from visitor center from campground.
Accessible viewpoints on driving tour were wonderful views. Hard working rangers were very helpful with questions.

Adequate for a short stay but not much more. Grass is beginning to overgrow sites as maintenance is lacking. Sites are cramped and the gravel that used to be in the driveways is long gone so now it's mud after rain. The canyon was great to visit but no reason to ever go back to the campground.

This is a beautiful campground. The sites are well maintained as are the facilities.
