Easy pull-through site, beautiful surroundings fairly separate from other sites, trail right to the canyon. I attended two evening programs at the amphitheater, both interesting.

Definitely do all the stops on the scenic drive, all of them are so different and provide many different perspectives of the canyon.

Beautiful campground. We were in Loop B. Two different spaces. Both felt very private, but bathrooms and other people close by. First spot, B17, had a view; second spot, B13, had not view but surrounded by trees and felt very private. Each spot had a picnic table, fire ring, and electric plug (Loop B). Easy walking distance to the Amphitheater for nightly Ranger program. We also did the South Rim Trail to the Visitors Center from our camp, about 1 mi easy (but hiking trail, not really what I would call a nature trail) each way. Toilets were clean, as was campground. Campgrounds hosts were friendly and helpful (but only one available for all three loops). Drinking water only is available.

We spent 3 nights at the South Rim Campground and thoroughly enjoyed our time. It's a well-kept campground with clean restrooms. The canyon itself is stunning. The park is a very busy place but that is to be expected in such an awesome location. Some sites are very limited on shade and you can't get firewood in the park, so be prepared. Water was available but limited. We will definitely come back.

I've been quite a few times over the years. This year the ParkRangers were exceptional!! Really seemed to be very proactive and informative to all visitors. Seemed to care about educating the public much more than in the past. Five star rangers!!

Getting There
The park is located approximately 250 mi (249.8 mi) southwest of Denver. The South Rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is 15 mi (14.9 mi) east of Montrose, CO, via U.S. Hwy 50 and CO Hwy 347.
Highway access
The campground is accessible via U.S. Highway 50 and Colorado Highway 347, located approximately 15 miles west of Montrose, CO.

General
- There are no water hookups or dump station at South Rim Campground.
- Cell phone reception is unreliable in the area.
- Bears frequent the area; all food must be kept in approved containers
- This is a high elevation facility (8,000 feet/2438m). Learn how to "Take it Easy at Altitude" and more on the park's Safety web page.
- Weather varies greatly from the canyon rim to the canyon floor; bring appropriate clothing
- Generator use is not permitted.
- There is NO wood collection or firewood sales in the park. Don't Move Firewood : Help protect our forests! Prevent the spread of tree-killing pests by obtaining firewood near your destination and burning it on-site. Moving firewood is illegal in some states.
