Clean and open campsite. Gearbox at each site, close to the toilet, very open but still felt far enough away from other campers.

Very private campground that backed up to miles of untouched land. Deer walked right behind our camp in the morning.

Thankful the park was able to open a small portion of the campground. There was a fire started by lightning years ago that also effected the campground so there isn't a lot of tree cover (especially in the spot I was in, full sun). Water was easy to get and the canyon is absolutely beautiful. The night sky is gorgeous and you can see so many stars. I highly recommend staying at the campground and doing the hike from the campground to the visitor center.

We actually didn't camp. Pretty hot so just came for the day and ate lunch at our campsite. We live in Ridgway so will be back when it's cooler.

This is a great place to stay if you’re not quite ready for wilderness camping. Easy access, clean sites, and everyone was quiet and respectful.

Would have loved to spend more time at this sight but we had some very noisy neighbors. Very enclosed and felt like we had privacy. Area for rent was surrounded by tree and bush which was so cool. Bathrooms were right up the road les than 2 min walk. Unfortunately no water access but we brought plenty of our own. Great location for visiting the park. Had spotty service with At&t maybe a bar or two randomly by the bathrooms. Was able to make a phone call and send/receive texts although not always reliably.

Getting There
The park is located approximately 250 mi (249.8 mi) southwest of Denver. The South Rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is 15 mi (14.9 mi) east of Montrose, CO, via U.S. Hwy 50 and CO Hwy 347.
Highway access
The campground is accessible via U.S. Highway 50 and Colorado Highway 347, located approximately 15 miles west of Montrose, CO.

General
- There are no water hookups or dump station at South Rim Campground.
- Cell phone reception is unreliable in the area.
- Bears frequent the area; all food must be kept in approved containers
- This is a high elevation facility (8,000 feet/2438m). Learn how to "Take it Easy at Altitude" and more on the park's Safety web page.
- Weather varies greatly from the canyon rim to the canyon floor; bring appropriate clothing
- Generator use is not permitted.
- There is NO wood collection or firewood sales in the park. Don't Move Firewood : Help protect our forests! Prevent the spread of tree-killing pests by obtaining firewood near your destination and burning it on-site. Moving firewood is illegal in some states.
