What Guests Are Saying
Amphitheater Campground is highly praised for its stunning views, cleanliness, and friendly, helpful camp hosts who enhance the overall experience. While the campground features tight roads and small sites, making it less suitable for larger RVs, it is ideal for tents and smaller trailers. Some guests noted the need for bear boxes and improvements to the pit toilets, but many expressed their eagerness to return due to the beautiful setting and access to hiking trails.

Enjoyed the campground very much. Location great for hiking & to town. Campground full every night, sites were clean. Only thing was the intense odor from the outhouse! And our site wasn't even close to the building!

Last year trees had to be cut down for safety reasons that we understand. That made out campsite more out in the open with little to no shade. But we still like the campsite.

Site details are wrong on Recreation.gov in these ways:
1. The site (#10) has no tree shade whatsoever
2. The site does not have space for a second unit. There is one parking space and one tent pad.
The fire ban was NOT enforced by the camp hosts. The campers in units 6 & 7 (on hill above your site, #10) had a campfire on 8/22/20. There were no evening rounds made by the hosts. I reported the fires the next morning to a no-action response. :(
The pit toilets are extraordinarily stinky. We camp a lot and usually really appreciate pit toilets.

This is a really nice campground if you are looking for something affordable and close to Ouray. It also has access to good hiking trails. The only drawbacks are the lack of bear boxes (you have to keep all food and cooking utensils in your car), and the composting outhouses that are not always conveniently located, and waft unpleasant odors in unpredictable directions.

The views from the lookout in the campground are amazing. Very cless as n and well run facility. The Hosts were friendly and took time to answer all my questions.

We camp at national forest campgrounds a lot and these restrooms were by far the worst we've seen. There is no reason for well maintained vault toilets to have such a stench. We were almost a block away and still the stench wafted into our site. Inside they were almost unbearable. We've camped at Ouray for 20+ years and the last couple of years the bathroom cleanliness has gone steadily downhill. This year was the worst by far though and affected our experience. Please require better restroom cleanliness, especially in covid19 times, there is no excuse.

This was our 3rd camping trip at Amphitheater Campground (the 1st trip with our kids). We loved our stay, and we cannot wait to return!

Wonderful campground with great views of Ouray. Fills up so get a reservation but don't count on first come first served on a weekend. You can hike directly into the Perimeter trail and also down to town. Really pretty perfect campground!

The hosts are very nice and keep a very clean campground. I would give them 5 stars. The toilets are horrible. You can smell them from 30' away. I bet the campground is grossing $20k a month in the summer. Come on Forest Service -- replace one a year with those new designs that do not smell. I give the toilets 0 stars. Add more spaces for campers there are too many people being turned away. Dead trees have been cut down which is fine, however could you you remove them rather that just leave then laying around!!
