About Heaton Bay

Heaton Bay Campground is situated at an elevation of 9,000 feet and centrally located for recreation and relaxation in the White River National Forest. There is little or no shade in the campground due to pine beetle infestation and the removal of hazard trees, but the sites offer open views to Dillon Reservoir and several mountain ranges.

What Guests Are Saying

Heaton Bay Campground is highly praised for its friendly hosts, clean facilities, and beautiful surroundings, making it a great spot for camping, hiking, and biking. While some visitors noted the low water levels and lack of a dump station as drawbacks, the campground's well-maintained sites and proximity to Dillon and Frisco for shopping and dining were appreciated. Overall, campers enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere and scenic views, with many expressing a desire to return despite minor inconveniences.

Awesome campground and location. Bike ride away from Frisco and Silverthorne. Kajak and paddle boarder enthusiasts have access to lake. Gorgeous views!!

The location of this campground is mainly the reason for the 5 stars. The bike & walking trails that surround it are insanely beautiful! We did a 3 mile bike ride east to the Dillon Damn Brewery with some seriously breathtaking views & later that day, a 2 mile bike ride west to Natural Grocers - also great views. The campground doesn’t feel like it’s near any of that! We stayed at site E81 with a rooftop tent. The bathroom was about a 40 second walk from our truck to the bathroom door, but far enough away that we still had enough privacy. 360 degree views of the mountains & parts of the lake and plenty of trees surrounding so we didn’t feel like we were camping with our neighbors. I highly recommend this campground! We’ve stayed on the east side of the lake before & it’s pretty but not as great as the west side!

We make this a stop on our annual pilgrimage around the state. The sites are spacious and nice, the grounds are well maintained, and the views can't be beat.

This was our first time at Heaton Bay and we weren't wise to how to pick a site in advance or realized that our site was really best set up for a camper and not a tent. However, we were still able to locate a good location for our tent and the drive-through ended up being really nice for our truck. The campground itself is massive but spread out enough that you don't feel on top of all the other campers. You're not really close to any other amenities so a vehicle is a must and part of the campground is right on the water. The real reason for my review is what it is though is the Campground Host. We ran into vehicle problems which left us stranded and our campground host was in constant contact with us about our particular site being free for an extra day if we needed it as well as being able to pack up a little late if needed. It really helped us keep our calm in the eye of an emotional storm. Thankfully everything worked out. We are already making plans to come back in 2020.

Coming to Colorado for a sport; kayaking, fishing, sailing, hiking, camping, shopping, and "cycling", this is the place. I can of only one con and that is hearing some freeway noise at night.

I did not actually stay at Heaton Bay because I could not get all the consecutive days I need for my stay in the Silverthorne area: however, I did drive through there to see what it was like and visited with the camp attendant. It is a very nice area with spectacular views. The camp attendant was also very helpful and informative,
