One of our favorite campgrounds in the Midwest! Spacious, clean and well maintained sites that are located only 1 1/2 miles south of Lake Michigan! The campground hosts were very efficient and attentive to our needs. Located halfway between Chesterton and Michigan City, you have quite a selection of restaurants and bars to choose from. Make reservations well ahead of time -- it fills up fast!

I like Dunewood. Each site has an individual quality to it (it's not a parking lot). There's plenty of space between sites and the forest environment adds additional privacy (a bonus!). I've camped there 3 times and was welcomed and checked in each time by the camp hosts within minutes of arriving. Electricity is not provided, so bring alternative power if you need it. I'm fine in my 16 ft. camper with on-board batteries. They do have flushing toilets and showers that are very clean and serviced every day. There's a nice Visitors Center on IN-49 with lots of info on things to do and explore. You can check their calendar from the website and plan to go when you see something interesting going on. If you want to camp, do your homework and choose a campground that fits the type of camper you are. If you lean towards boondocking and like a more primitive experience, Dunewood is a good place for that. If you like full hookups and extra amenities, then you'd be happier at the Indiana Dunes STATE Park campground (that's within the National Park). And if you choose to camp in the summertime, you've got to expect that Summer + Forests = Mosquitoes. The staff can’t keep the bugs out. Better to go in early Spring or late Fall if you can't protect yourself from them. If tent camping, you may hear traffic at night due to the highways, interstates and train tracks nearby. I've experienced all those negative things, but Dunewood and the area around it is still one of my favorite places for its beauty, the beaches and tropical vibe. And I'll be going back. It all depends on how you see it.

The sites are small and flat without any good options for hammocks, so I do not recommend if you’re trying to hammock camp. The mosquitos were so bad even with bug spray that we ended up leaving and not actually staying the night.
