The park is a wonderful place to came at. My only complaint would be internet and phone accessablity. It is almost impossible to get any internet and I feel it is very important to have phone service. Not only for calls in, but making an emergency call is almost non existent.

Great location on the river, lots of shade trees, a great walking/biking trail. There is the added bonus of watching the bald eagles feeding on the river.

Delightful two nights at camp site 72. The site did have a bit of a sink hole (about 6-8") in the middle of the site. Had to park over the hole to avoid sinking in further. Wonderful time watching the eagles, hawks and stork/cranes capturing fish. Convenient location to Pella. The registration desk was forgiving - forgot my lifetime National Park pass for the discount - not sure why I need the pass on registration - I used the pass account code to register and all of my information lined up on registration - needless to say, was able to have my wife drive 50 mi from home to get the pass and off the naughty list.

Love staying at Howell Station except for the poor phone reception. Also, the campgrounds needed to be mowed. The grass was very tall.

This is my favorite campground! The spaces are huge, the shower house is always clean, very friendly host and the deer walk through every day ❤️

The park is very nice, great bike trail Restrooms & showers are very clean and well maintained. The only thing the cell phone service is very poor. the RCV sites are very spacious .

The campground was very well kept up. Workers were nice and courteous. Many spots have lots of shade with full mature trees. Trails and bike path was an extra plus. Pella is a nice little town to visit as well.

From Pella, Iowa, take Highway T-15 southwest for 5 mi, then turn east on Idaho Drive to 198th Place. Travel south and follow signs to campground.
Policies & Rules
Arrival & departure
- Reservations are required before occupying a site.
- Check-in is at 3:00 PM and check-out is at 2:00 PM.
Cancellation policy
- Reservation fees are non-refundable. For campsites, cabins, lookouts, yurts, group sites, and similar stays, we charge a reservation service fee of $8.
- Standard cancellations usually have a $10 cancellation fee. Customers can generally cancel before the check-in date online.
- Late cancellation rules differ by stay type.
- Individual campsites: cancelling after 12:00am local time the day before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
- Cabins, lookouts, and yurts: cancelling less than 14 days before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
- One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
- Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
- Early departures may or may not be refunded. At certain facilities, partial refunds may be possible if staff can mark the site available for other visitors. No refund is given for a night if the early departure is requested after that day's check-out time.
- Security deposits are separate. Security deposits may be refunded to the original payment method if the facility is left in acceptable condition, as determined by the property.
Fees & deposits
- The fee booth is open daily with specific hours for weekdays and weekends.
Fires & fuel
- Firewood is available in limited supply; it's recommended to bring your own.
Site capacity
- Campsites allow one wheeled unit and two tents or three tents, with a maximum of eight people.
Vehicles & parking
- No parking or driving on the grass, except for boat trailers.
- Golf carts, UTVs, and ATVs are not allowed.
Safety & rules
- Water-based play equipment such as kiddie pools and slip-and-slides are not allowed.
- Inflatable play equipment like bounce houses are not allowed.
