The lake is beautiful and we enjoyed our campsite, but it was VERY expensive for a basic campsite, there was no attendant at the entrance when we arrived around 4:00, and the showers/bathrooms weren't in great condition. The scenery is lovely and it was easy to get to, but other aspects could be improved and the cost is really high.

The restrooms were not kept in good order. The hand dryers did not work. some of the sites, (like ours) had fire pits that were near three ft. high which prevented us from sitting and enjoying the fire.

One of our favorite campgrounds! Needs some TLC after the flooding a few years ago. Hosts and staff are as good as they get. Lakeside sites are fantastic!

Cave run lake is beautiful. We have stayed at zilpo many times. This particular time was a bit weird for mid July because the campground was completely empty. We were there Monday Tuesday so maybe that was the issue that it was just a weird vibe not having other people there. The front gate where you check in at very limited hours and as far as I’m aware, the camp store was not open at all and we needed some things we were able to get firewood and ice by the main gate but only if there was someone there and like I said with very limited hours, you could easily be stuck without firewood or ice.
The campground is clean and well managed. People are friendly. We will keep going back.

Campground is a great location, but the facilities aren’t being taken care of like they have in the past. Several water stations don’t work. Some bathroom facilities have out of order toilets and urinals, and the main gate is not fully staffed.

This is my second time to Zilpo and the lady at the gate was super nice and helpful. We were able to find out campsite very easily. Unfortunately, the trails had some downed trees and in some places and it was hard to access the lake from our campsite. I learned that the storms last year ravaged the campgrounds and it's super hard to clear trees in that volume on such a large property. We found some work around, had an amazing peaceful time and wish we could have stayed longer. Thanks for a great experience this year!

Our picnic table was so covered in mold and wood rot, it was unusable. The water spigots in our loop were not working. We had to get water from other side of campground. The main gate was only manned an hour or so each day, so it was difficult to purchase firewood or ice. The convenience store in beach area was never opened. The campground looked like no maintenance has been completed in a long time. Campers we met that had been here before, said they never saw it looking this rundown.
The camp host did a good job keeping the restroom and showers clean.
Pretty disappointed with our visit here.

In Salt Lick, KY, at the intersection of State Route 211 and U.S. Route 60,
take Route 211 south for 3.6 miles to the Forest Recreation sign. Turn left
at the sign, onto Clear Creek Road and go 3.9 miles to Zilpo Campground sign.
Turn left at the sign onto Forest Route 918 and drive 8.7 miles to the campground.
The campground is accessible via U.S. Route 60 and State Route 211. U.S. Route 60 is approximately 3.6 miles from the campground.
16 mi drive to downtown Salt Lick (about 28 min)
Policies & Rules
General
- Limit 6 people and 2 vehicles per single campsite; additional vehicles will be charged an additional fee per night; additional guest will be charged $2 per night.
- Each cabin has 2 double bunk beds with out mattresses, Please bring your own sleeping bags or other bedding.Each cabin can accommodate up to 6 people and 1 vehicle. Tents and RVs are not allowed at the cabins.
- Beach is opened from Memorial day to Labor day, unless flooding occurs hours of operation are 11am to 8 pm
- Only Authorized companies are allowed to drop off and set up rental trailers, all unauthorized RV trailer rental deliveries will be turned away.
- Reserved Sites will be held until check out time (NOON) the day following your arrival date. Sites must be occupied by the checkout time of that following day to hold a reservation or the site will be forfeited and released to other guests. Once your reservation start date has begun, neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager will be able to modify your reservation.
- Don't Move Firewood: Help protect our forests! Prevent the spread of tree-killing pests by obtaining firewood at or near your destination and burning it on-site. Moving firewood is illegal in some states. Visit dontmovefirewood.org to learn more.
- A discount of 25% is now available for reservations that include 7 or more consecutive days.
