Greenbelt Campground

Greenbelt Campground is a treasure for both travelers and for locals. Very reasonable rates with great access to DC and the surroundings. The facilities are adequate and the trail system is super nice.

I would normally have given this campground five stars, but there were scouts taking over a bunch of sites. The scouts were respectful, but a bit noisy and did not enhance the campground experience I was after.

First off, my campsite had to be changed last minute because there was a dangerous branch above my original spot. So, day of trip, I was asked to pick another spot. So, not knowing anything about the nature of the spots, I chose spot B70.
When I went to the spot, a ranger actually 2 rangers came up to me and told me I could not pull into the spot, like most campgrounds I have been to over my 57 years camping all across the country. Well, she stated that my car, a Jeep, needed to be "on the pad", well, I didn't see any pad. most of the other spots had a paved pad that was perpendicular to the street. I was told that in spot B70, the "pad" was basically a parking spot that was PARALLEL to the street. about 40 ft from the picnic table. Not convenient as I told the ranger that I was sleeping IN THE JEEP. I have a bed and a full setup to sleep in the jeep. She told me I had to move my car, again about 40 ft from the table. I complied, but was not happy. I had ZERO privacy that the JEEP would have provided. It was not a good stay. (I was there for the Grand Prix 250th) And the fixtures in the bathroom looked like they haven't been updated since the 70's. That and the constant patrols by actual POLICE made the stay even more uncomfortable. I would either think twice about staying here again, it IS convenient to DC, or I would pick another spot. Other than that the campground was fine, but needs routine maintenance. Good for $20 a night though.

Terrific experience. Nice, big tent sites, water not far away, huge shower. Can't beat the price, either. Shout-out to Ranger Sharon for being so kind, friendly, and helpful.

We had a great stay and were helped by the rangers and camp hosts. The only thing was our site was quite terrible for size and angle. However we were able to switch right away as there were many availabilities. Thank you!

We stayed for one night, amenities are sufficient and it’s not far to a Metro stop to get into D.C.

Nice and quiet.

We chose this campground as a base to go explore DC. It is very safe, with police doing patrols regularly. The bathrooms need updating, but everything functions properly, and when I'm camping, I'm not asking for much more than that. You need to read the description of your camping spot carefully because mine had a slope that made popping a tent in the grass impractical. I set it up on the paved parking spot instead. The night sounds of the forest mingle with the night sounds of the city, so be prepared for cicadas and police sirens lulling you to sleep. The grounds were well maintained and I felt very safe leaving my basic gear at the site.
For the price, you can't beat it as a home base for a trip to DC

Campground was perfect base for our trip to Washington DC. The bathroom/shower were consistent with our experiences in other national parks. Look at pictures carefully when selecting your campsite, many sites are very small and overgrown. Others are big and beautiful. Leave an empty site between you and a neighbor to ensure you have enough room
