What Guests Are Saying
Black River Harbor Campground offers a beautiful and peaceful setting with well-maintained sites and proximity to stunning waterfalls and Lake Superior. Many visitors appreciate the privacy between campsites and the cleanliness of the facilities, despite some concerns about limited water access and steep trails. Overall, it’s a great spot for outdoor activities and a relaxing getaway, though mobility issues and the lack of potable water may be drawbacks for some.

Enjoyed the place, but be prepared for no connectivity within 5-10 miles.

We have been camping up at the Black River Harbor for years (since the early 90's) and have many great family memories from there. It is one of our families favorite places! It has been very disappointing of how the campground has deteriorated over the year and how many things have been uncared for. years ago there was a host who took ownership of the campground and made sure that it was cared for. There was water and a dump station. The kids would ride their bikes around the loop.
Now, there is no host, no water, no dump station and the road is worse than Chicago roads in the spring. The trail down to the harbor has been taped off with a sign saying that the trail is "temporarily" closed. Well, it's been over three years if not more. I realize that it is a national forest and managed by the federal government and perhaps this is why it is not getting the attention and care that it requires. Must not be a priority. Such a same that a place of such natural beauty is tainted by the lack of stewardship.

Lots of deep potholes on the road around the campsites.

Lots of space between sites. Could walk to lake overlook from site. Clean bathrooms. Overall nice spot, good proximity to black river harbor and Presque Isle for some easy hikes featuring waterfalls.

I've been to this campground a half dozen times or so, love it, and will keep coming back. That said, there are a couple of points I hope get addressed soon. There has been no water available on location since at least last year, so you'll have to plan for that and bring extra water and containers. The campground road is riddled with potholes so beware and take it slow. Also, the trail from the campground to the day use area has been closed for the past two years or more. I don't know what the issue is with it but I hope that would get opened back up in the near future. The beach area and the waterfalls are wonderful as always and the sites themselves are nicely spaced with some trees in between so campers don't feel on top of each other as in some other campgrounds.

Beautiful campsite, lots of privacy. Walk to the bathrooms might be a bit long for some.

Nice wooded sites with lots of privacy. Park well maintained and cleaned. Only issue we had was a guy with a crazy loud generator. We were able to move sites so it was not a big deal. Can’t fault the campground for some people’s rudeness. Spectacular views of the lake.

The first four days were five stars. The campground was mostly full of tents, pop ups, small trailers, and a few 5ers and Class As. The site was clean and groomed. Spacing is nice and provides some privacy. The location is secluded with an easy walk to a quiet stretch of Lake Superior shoreline. The waterfalls in the area are a don't miss attraction. For a longer day trip the State Park to the east was magnificent as was Copper Peak.
The last three nights were 1 star. A large open frame generator ran 24/7 the entire time. The "camper" said quiet hours were only for TVs and radios. The generator ran even while they left the campsite. The owner ignored all requests to honor the quiet hours and insulted anyone that asked. We were three campsites away and it interfered with our sleep.
There are no camp hosts, no cellar coverage, and the Rangers do not answer knocks on the door at their offices about 20 miles away. You are on your own.

Campground was pretty great set up right against Lake Superior. A lot of little hikes to water falls really close.
Unfortunately there wasn’t any drinkable water at the campsite and we weren’t notified beforehand. I believe the fountains were broken or contaminated.
