What Guests Are Saying
Ausable River Camping offers a beautiful and serene environment, with spacious, well-maintained sites and picturesque views of the river. Campers appreciate the remote, rustic charm and the opportunities for fishing and hiking. While there are some concerns regarding ticks, road conditions, noise from generators, and occasional issues with campsite bookings, many visitors still express a strong desire to return for another experience in nature.

Monument - very good host, place was spotless. Primitive site #83 - great, although the reservation process is cumbersome (can’t be done online) for someone like me who doesn’t plan ahead. Buttercup - thanks for still giving us some free camping sites.

Busier than I prefer. Lots of motor boats. First canoe camp for my grandson so I wanted to go to a place that was paddle in without portages. Campsites are nice, overused though. I would love to see more patrols by DNR OR USFW officers as we found lots of trash and food scraps. Racoons at both sites we stayed at each night because they are used to finding easy food. We used bear barrels for ours so we didn’t have any issues but were still visited by the critters. Good area for a quick trip but definitely not wilderness.

The river was amazing! We loved our trip. The views were so beautiful. There were a few issues.
Not all of the camp sites are marked with a number, there were a few times we had to guess if we were at the right site. And there were two times we were not.

Super secluded, large campsite. It was a little tight getting back to it with a camper, but worth the effort. The only thing I would do differently would be to call the staff at Lumbermans Monument and talk to them about what equipment I had and what sites would be best. I did this after the fact. They have a vast knowledge of the area and are super helpful! Don't forget to check out the JR Ranger program if you have little ones. Can't wait to go back!!!!

Site 81 has beautiful view of the river, perfect balance of shade and sun. The road in has some tight areas getting to the site, but nothing too difficult. Very little other traffic. A very peaceful 4 days. Would like to spend longer next time.

Had an awesome weekend at site 8. The hike in was super easy and easy to find, the site was beautiful as always and had wood already on site. Love paying it forward. Can’t wait to visit again

I’ve been camping on or near the Ausable River for most of my life. It is a beautiful place with little to know residents along its banks. Located in northeast central Michigan it makes for a great base camp allowing you to explore many of Michigan’s smaller cities, towns and wonderful natural resources.
