About Valley of Fires Recreation Area

Valley of Fires recreation area is located immediately adjacent to the Malpais Lava Flow. Approximately 5,000 years ago, Little Black Peak erupted and flowed 44 miles into the Tularosa Basin, filling the basin with molten rock. The resulting lava flow is four to six miles wide, 160 feet thick and covers 125 square miles. The lava flow is considered to be one of the youngest lava flows in the continental United States.    The Bureau of Land Management maintains and manages the Valley of Fires Recreation area, which is located four miles west of Carrizozo, NM, on US Highway 380. Valley of Fires offers both camping and day use. 13 of the campsites have 30- and 50-amp electrical hookups and water hookups, all sites have picnic shelters, tables, trashcans and barbeque grills. Two of the RV sites are accessible, as are the restrooms. Showers are provided in the main restroom/shower house. An RV dump station is also available. Two group shelters are accessible and available for rental. The 3/4-mile Malpais Nature Trail offers a close-up look of the lava surface.

The campground is very well maintained and just so beautiful. The campground host was very helpful. When we asked for help in reserving a camp site, he was very accommodating. He helped us designate our site as occupied so that we were able to drive around and not worry that someone else will take our spot. The water in the showers was nice and hot. It was a great experience.

#1-We had made reservations months ago for valley of fires in carrizzo, nm. They were for April 5-7. Reservation #0687173249-1. When we arrived our site was already occupied! The camp host said he had no record of us. There were no other sites available. We ended up having to share our already paid for site that night. The next morning we were asked if we were leaving so he could "open" the site. We said no, that we'd paid for 2 nites. Again there was no record on his end. Is there an issue in your reservation system?

This is an excellent campground if you are travelling through this area. It is in a remote part of NM, but I'd love to come back! Great price, full hookups for RVs with pull-through spots, and I was surprised by the views of both sides of the valley from this elevated hill. My family enjoyed walking the nature trail through the old lava flows right from camp, and the dark skies where you can see the milky way on a clear night.
