About Gallo Campground

Gallo Campground is located within Chaco Culture National Historical Park. Tucked among the fallen boulders and cliffs of Gallo Wash, the campground offers camping in a rugged environment, surrounded by petroglyphs, a cliff dwelling, inscriptions and a high desert landscape. The area is remote with no services. Please be prepared with plenty of food, water, shade, sunscreen and cold weather necessities. Traveling to Chaco Two roads access Chaco Culture National Historical Park. From the north, Road 7900 turns off of US Hwy 550/44 three miles east of Nageezi and fifty miles west of Cuba. Continue on Road 7900 for five paved miles then turn right onto Road 7950 where the payment will continue for several miles. The rest of the thirteen miles are unpaved. From the south, turn north onto NM Rt. 57 for twenty miles of rough unpaved road. When the unpaved roads are wet (rain, snow, etc.) they can be difficult to traverse, and vehicles can become stuck in thick mud or slide off the slippery road. Please keep in mind that there is no phone service and it is sometimes difficult to get tow service along these roads. Please contact us at 505 786-7014 for the latest road conditions. Campfires in Gallo CampgroundA fire may be ignited and maintained only by using fuel sources designed and commonly used for warmth or the preparation of food, such as charcoal briquettes or natural firewood. Lighting or maintaining a fire with other manufactured or synthetic materials is prohibited.Marijuana on Federal LandsPosted: May 27, 2022, With the legalization of marijuana in the State of New Mexico, Chaco Culture National Historical Park would like to provide clarification regarding the use and possession of marijuana on Federal lands. The recently passed New Mexico State law, which allows for limited recreational marijuana use under certain conditions, has no bearing on Federal laws which continue to identify marijuana as a Schedule I illegal drug, and prohibit its use. Possession of marijuana or use of any amount of marijuana is still prohibited in Chaco Culture National Historical Park, its facilities, concessions, and campgrounds.

This is a very basic, no frills campground that is very, very tight, with campers squeezed right on top of one another. Thankfully, very few of our neighbors lit a campfire. If we had done so in the fire ring provided at our campsite it would probably have set the tent on fire. The fire ring in Site # 7 is, literally, just a few feet from the tent pad.
But the most glaring deficiency of the Gallo Campground is the lack of shade. In the summer months Chaco is broiling hot during the day and there is ZERO SHADE!
This park is so beautiful and so awesome and it deserves a much, much, much better campground than Gallo.
The most positive comment I can offer about Gallo is that the bathrooms are decent; clean and functional with areas that are adequate to fill water bottles and rinse dishes. It helps that there are two bathroom buildings and that several campsites are closed due to rockfall. As a result, the bathrooms appear to be adequate to handle the campground capacity (especially given the fact that many people reserve sites but don't show up).
If you like roasting in hours of hot sun, in close proximity to neighboring campers and the campground's dusty gravel roads you are going to love the Gallo campground.

Pleasantly surprised by full-service bathrooms (flush toilets/running water)--had not expected that. The campground is small and does not lend itself to large, boisterous parties, which is great. Didn't have much interaction with park rangers; I did see some. I know they are struggling with all the cuts and wish they didn't have to.

Campground and restrooms are immaculate. Yay!!!hot showers and a laundromat. Plus, laundromat has plenty of plugs to recharge cell phone. I highly recommend it.

Nice and clean, BUT There are mice living in the store room of the restroom / water supply sink room.
With hantavirus in the area should be more aggressive at removing them. I saw mice coming in and out from under the door of the store room into the sink room. I mentioned this to the campground host and she said that she mentioned it to her superiors but they did not seem to be concerned.
