Gallo Campground

Hesitant to post a review because this was the most idyllic park experience. Was this how cool it was to travel in the 70s-80s? A beautiful national park shared amongst 8 other campers and hikers. I’ve been to plenty, but based on crowds and proximity to nature, Chaco Heritage takes the cake.

Chaco Canyon is an absolute must-see! It’s one of the National Park Service’s hidden jewels, and all the more unforgettable because its relative inaccessibility means that it gets many fewer visitors than other National Parks. The campground facilities are excellent—flush toilets, sinks, potable water, clean facilities, etc. The individual sites are a bit lacking in privacy, but as there are no trees in the vicinity, that is to be expected. The cliff backdrop of the campground is beautiful and the night sky is awesome. Stay at least two nights, if you can.

It’s no small feat getting here and, it’s absolutely worth it. The Ranger tour and visitor center were both excellent. This location has been on our list for a long time, we will definitely be back, maybe not in August tho.

Hot, but the heat was mitigated by the resources provided by the campground.

Chaco Canyon is Sacred Land and offers a glimpse into U.S. History that goes beyond our current understanding. It is a place that offers an activities for the next generation of cosmic explorers to witness the Sky in a truly remarkable way. There are many trails and ruins as well as petroglyphs and pictographs to explore. I recommend at least a 3 day visit but a week would be better. There are plenty of long hikes and short ones and if you really want to take it all in should require a bit of rest in between. It’s really inspiring for photography and ancestral/anthropological studies or for me, music and art. I imagine a culture that existed upon this land that we know very little about, and yet we should know and appreciate the humans who were here before us. Why did they leave us so many clues? I’m here as an advocate to Save the Chaco land from being sold. I believe that all our National Parks and shared public lands should be protected for generations to come. The camping facilities were some of the best up kept I have visited in a National Park and I look forward to a return to Chaco for another spiritually uplifting experience. It was a great treat to visit the park and the greater area. What a National Treasure. Thank you to the awesome staff and people who steward this land.

A perfect place to enjoy peace and quiet. We tent camped under a full moon and the stillness at night was the whole point — no traffic, no light bleed, just the canyon walls and the sky. The petroglyphs are behind the campground and you can walk to them straight from your site. A lightning storm rolled through with rain and it only added awesome visuals. Watching weather and sunset move down the canyon was one of the better hours of the trip.

Planning notes for anyone considering it:
We came in from the south, out of Seven Lakes. That road is rough dirt. Fill your tank and buy groceries before you turn off pavement, and expect no cell service once you're in.

Do the Pueblo Bonito and Chetro Ketl loop. The backcountry trails are worth the effort — Pueblo Alto gives you the overlook that makes the whole layout of the canyon make sense. Permits are free and self-issued at the trailhead. Bring more water than you think you need. The campground has flush toilets, FYI.

Come on a new moon if stargazing is your priority. Chaco is a Dark Sky Park and abut the full moon in the desert is also spectacular.

Peaceful and beautiful campground with running water at the ultra-clean restrooms. The sky at night was incredibly dark, and the other 7 or 8 campers were all polite and happy.

The three of us had 2 campsites: the 20-ft RV sat level in one site and my daughter’s tent had a clean & level sand “area” that stayed dry during a very heavy rainfall event. There was no trash on the ground, the recycle container was clearly marked, and it was very nice that there was a dumpster for other refuse.

The park ranger did an “all is well” drive-around check twice during each of our 2 nights’ stay. The picnic tables were sturdy and clean; we did not use the fire ring, but I believe it had a grate for grilling, but I can’t be sure.

Signage was current and clear. All the other campers were respectful by keeping driving to a minimum and not making much noise, which was just so nice of them: all we would hear was their laughter.

In short, Gallow Campground is first-rate.

Beautiful site. We had a reservation but the site wasn’t marked reserved so I can see that being an issue if someone was coming in late.

Great camp beautiful sites. Just need a little more capex on bathrooms, the museum, and the deteriorated fiber glass signs.

Sign of the times

Overall good. Half the campground closed do to falling rock, but no signs of rock falls in a long time. No host, which in my opinion is the reason for the closure due to pictographs in the area. The campgrounds were cleaned and level spots. I would not hesitate to stay there again.
