About Gallo Campground

Gallo Campground is located within Chaco Culture National Historical Park. Tucked among the fallen boulders and cliffs of Gallo Wash, the campground offers camping in a rugged environment, surrounded by petroglyphs, a cliff dwelling, inscriptions and a high desert landscape. The area is remote with no services. Please be prepared with plenty of food, water, shade, sunscreen and cold weather necessities. Traveling to Chaco Two roads access Chaco Culture National Historical Park. From the north, Road 7900 turns off of US Hwy 550/44 three miles east of Nageezi and fifty miles west of Cuba. Continue on Road 7900 for five paved miles then turn right onto Road 7950 where the payment will continue for several miles. The rest of the thirteen miles are unpaved. From the south, turn north onto NM Rt. 57 for twenty miles of rough unpaved road. When the unpaved roads are wet (rain, snow, etc.) they can be difficult to traverse, and vehicles can become stuck in thick mud or slide off the slippery road. Please keep in mind that there is no phone service and it is sometimes difficult to get tow service along these roads. Please contact us at 505 786-7014 for the latest road conditions. Campfires in Gallo CampgroundA fire may be ignited and maintained only by using fuel sources designed and commonly used for warmth or the preparation of food, such as charcoal briquettes or natural firewood. Lighting or maintaining a fire with other manufactured or synthetic materials is prohibited.Marijuana on Federal LandsPosted: May 27, 2022, With the legalization of marijuana in the State of New Mexico, Chaco Culture National Historical Park would like to provide clarification regarding the use and possession of marijuana on Federal lands. The recently passed New Mexico State law, which allows for limited recreational marijuana use under certain conditions, has no bearing on Federal laws which continue to identify marijuana as a Schedule I illegal drug, and prohibit its use. Possession of marijuana or use of any amount of marijuana is still prohibited in Chaco Culture National Historical Park, its facilities, concessions, and campgrounds.

The camp site had a large usable area with a good fire ring and picnic table. We also booked site 15 for family and the two sites together made a perfect area for family with the two corner spots. These two spots are low traffic. Neither spot has shade. Spot 15 needed lots of lift on one side to make the camper level. Vehicle lights shine in to the camper from the main road at night. Spot 16 needed minimal support to level the camper. Spot 15 could be accessed on the normal one way route to back in park a truck and pull behind camper. Spot 16 had to be accessed the wrong way to be able to back in park a truck and pull behind camper. There is plenty of room for a truck park once unhooked. The worst part of the main road takes about 20 minutes to travel the last 8-10 miles.

We did not visit the campground because our plans changed. We paid in full at the time of reservation and were billed again four months later. They directly billed my credit card four months after our non-visit for no explained reason. I have always loved our National Parks, but now I have to deal with false billing through the park system right before Christmas. This is inconvenient and disappointing.

No frills really but the heated bathrooms in winter are a game changer. Thank you.

It has been 43 years since we last visited and camped in Chaco Canyon. The access road now follows a different route and we found the new road to be much friendlier for vehicular travel. All of the staff were so helpful, friendly, and professional. The campsites (tent camping) were well maintained, as were the restroom facilities. The night skies were spectacular and we enjoyed exploring the many petroglyph sites in the daytime. As in the past, we truly enjoyed visiting the amazing habitation sites and found the footpaths to be well-maintained as well. All in all, mid-September was a great time to enjoy Chaco Canyon and camp at Gallo Campground.

I camp at Gallo several times every year. I always have a good experience, the restrooms are clean, the sites are well kept, the Rangers at the Visitors center are great resources and well informed. I appreciate that Chaco Canyon is a space I can visit, it is a beautiful sacred space that it very meaningful to me. Thank you for caring for this space and providing the opportunity for me to visit and and learn something new each time I attend. There have been Ranger led talks in the fire circle this summer, my son and I enjoy the conversation and connection.

I honestly can't review the campground because the 19 mile access road was in such bad shape, I turned around after about 5 miles. I haven't ever been on such an awfully gutted and bone jarring road.

Gallo is a unique experience to stay in a park of the type such as chaco. Take your time in the park and visit the outlier ruins. There are few programs, and the museum is minimal, but it is still a place worth a visit.
