Standing Indian is our favorite campground! The camp hosts are wonderful and always helpful! We stay numerous times a year, and feel like it’s our home away from home. The reason for the good rating versus an excellent one is due to the lack of gravel in the campsites. Of course we know that when we go camping it’s going to rain sometimes, and no one has control over that., but some good gravel covering the sites would sure help. It rained off and on everyday the last week we were there, and our campsite had literally no gravel. Needless to say it took us days to clean up the mud from our camper , chairs, screen house, etc. after we returned home. That does not make for a “ happy camper “! I know that numerous campers have complained about the lack of gravel for years, but it hasn’t changed anything. Some sites have fair gravel coverage, while others have little to none. We are more familiar with loop 3 since that is where we like to stay. So...... our advise is be prepared for a muddy mess if you get rain, and that’s no fun!

We've been to Standing Indian many times. The only complaint is the camp hosts sell green firewood to the campers and keep the seasoned wood for themselves.

Conveniently close to numerous hiking trails. As a tent camper seeking peace and quiet, I enjoyed the atmosphere of the D loop. Wish I had known to bring my tube for the stream.

From Franklin, North Carolina, take U.S. Highway 64 west approximately 12 miles, passing through Winding Stair Gap. Near the bottom of the mountain from the gap, turn left on West Old Murphy Road (State Route 1448) and watch for a directional sign for the campground. Go 1.9 miles and turn right on Forest Road 67 at the Standing Indian Campground sign. This is a paved road. Go 1.7 miles and turn right into the campground.
The campground is accessible via U.S. Highway 64, which is approximately 12 miles from Franklin, North Carolina, and connects to State Route 1448 (West Old Murphy Road) leading to the campground.
Elevation: 1031 feet
17 mi drive to downtown Franklin (about 25 min)
