We've been to Standing Indian many times. The only complaint is the camp hosts sell green firewood to the campers and keep the seasoned wood for themselves.

Conveniently close to numerous hiking trails. As a tent camper seeking peace and quiet, I enjoyed the atmosphere of the D loop. Wish I had known to bring my tube for the stream.

There are beautiful sites at the campground unfortunately ours wasn’t one of them. Ours was on a narrow inclined gravel access road with underbrush close in. Backing into it was extremely difficult. The water source had the threads sawed off so we had to fill our tank at another loop. Not a great experience.

There are beautiful sites at the campground unfortunately ours wasn’t one of them. Ours was on a narrow inclined gravel access road with underbrush close in. Backing into it was extremely difficult. The water source had the threads sawed off so we had to fill our tank at another loop. Not a great experience.

Excellent campground. Great for families and occasional fisherman. Clean, well organized and nice people running it. Will certainly return.

From Franklin, North Carolina, take U.S. Highway 64 west approximately 12 miles, passing through Winding Stair Gap. Near the bottom of the mountain from the gap, turn left on West Old Murphy Road (State Route 1448) and watch for a directional sign for the campground. Go 1.9 miles and turn right on Forest Road 67 at the Standing Indian Campground sign. This is a paved road. Go 1.7 miles and turn right into the campground.
The campground is accessible via U.S. Highway 64, which is approximately 12 miles from Franklin, North Carolina, and connects to State Route 1448 (West Old Murphy Road) leading to the campground.
Elevation: 1031 feet
