About Dovre Recreation Site

Want to camp? Camping season is generally May-September, with Alder Glen and Elk Bend remaining open through the weekend following General Western Oregon Coast 2nd Season for elk. During months with reduced sunlight, potable water may be turned off. Be prepared to bring your own wash and drinking water. Reserve a site at one of our four campgrounds on recreation.gov or pay when you arrive for non-reserved campsites using the Recreation.gov Mobile App. You must download before you reach the site since there is no cell reception in the drainage.  A place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the electronic age. Dover is the Bureau of Land Management’s western most campground in the Nestucca River Recreation Area. The campground sits along the Nestucca River National Back Country Byway and newly designated Nestucca Wild and Scenic River (https://www.rivers.gov/rivers/nestucca.php). The Byway takes travelers on a slow, leisurely route that winds through Oregon's Coast Range. The Nestucca River is renowned for fishing opportunities and beauty.

Pros: Beautiful little creek with a swimming hole. Absolutely massive redwoods and ferns. Nice picnic pavilion. The night sky was beautiful.
Cons: Vault toilet, no sink, no running water. Site 05, River, is very very small and directly next to another campsite. We slept in our car and other cars were parked next to us similar to a store parking lot. The drive to the campground is very winding and difficult in the dark.

Nice back country camping site. We stayed on Camp#1. Some people may not like that it was right on the road at the entrance of the site. We chose it because it was the first camping for our 2 year old daughter and we wanted to stay away from water. The road sees very little traffic, it wasn't an issue. Enough room to put 2 tents. The grill on the fire pit was not really usable because of big spacing. So, bring your own portable grill/stove. The potable water tasted great. Bathrooms were clean for a backcountry site.

The campground is very nice and well maintained. The toilet was clean and the host was very friendly. The river was nice to hang out with fellow campers during the day. The only thing we didn't like was our site. Site number 5 needs a better description. Even though there are pictures online, it doesn't do justice to the fact that there is literally no place for a tent. We put ours on the pavement, which wasn't terrible but it's also not level. It should really be an RV/camper only site.

Small camp ground. Peaceful. Wonderful and clean bathroom. For a vaulted toilet I’ve never seen better!! Camped in spot #3. Had one big space up on a hill away from fire for large tent. Plenty of space for 2 more bigger tents down below. Maybe also a small one if packing them in there. Parking plenty big enough for 2 cars and noted extra parking (for a fee) up above right as you drive into campground. Host was very nice and answered all questions easily and was helpful when asking directions, etc. Picnic table was solid. Fire pit has seen better days and the grill part isn’t really useful. Your food would fall through the slats as they are placed so far apart. You could hear River and see it from camping spot. Just small, easy trek down the small hill. Great place to throw rocks, relax in nature. Small little area you can kind of swim in. More like wade. No angling allowed. Coast is 30 minutes up the road but because of curves takes about 45 minutes. No cell service within 20-30 from campsite. Not big enough to ride bikes. Maybe small children could ride around in scooters but it would technically be on the small campground road. You can stand in the middle of this “road” and see all campgrounds and host spot. You can see your neighbors except for spot #6 which is down a steep hill. But even saying that the camping spots have space in between them and you don’t feel like you are on top of your neighbors. We would definitely go back, especially because of the proximity to the city where we live. Completely 100% in nature within 1 hour from home.
