About Rio Grande Village (Big Bend, TX)

The Rio Grande Village Campground sits near the banks of the Rio Grande, the International Boundary between the United States and Mexico. It is one of the most popular campgrounds in Big Bend National Park, especially for those traveling in large recreational vehicles. It is located close to Boquillas Canyon and Hot Springs, and serves as a launch point for visitors accessing the river or the endless miles of backcountry roads. Rio Grande Village has an outstanding view of the Sierra del Carmen Mountains, located in Mexico to the east, which light up with hues of red and orange during sunset.

Arrived at the park and our composite was clean and well kept and marked for us. Shortly after we arrived a couple of the park ranger volunteers came by and checked with us to make sure we were ok. They answered a few questions I had about the park and trails. Later an official ranger came through and educated some young campers about the rules. The park cattle and horses meandered through the grounds keeping the grass low and my girls loved seeing them up close. We had some excitement when the pack of coyotes ran through the camp at around 4 am yelping and howling. They didn’t bother anyone and the animals ignored them so we never felt concerned for our safety.

Nice campground with beautiful views nearby. Wild horses, mules and cows wandered the campground, and coyotes were loud at night. The bathrooms were clean and water was easily accessible. I enjoyed my stay.

This is a great campground--well attended and clean. The wonderful nature trail leading to a small ridge overlooking the Rio Grande is spectacular, especially at sunrise and sunset. There's tons of wildlife to watch. Sites had either shade structures or cottonwood and mesquite trees for shade, which you need because it was in the 90s even in mid October (about 10 degrees warmer than the weather app prediction, which might be for the Park Headquarters in the Chisos Mountains). The campers were all considerate of the Dark Sky designation, keeping evening lighting to a minimum so the stargazing was fabulous! We stayed 6 nights and loved our time there.

Was in Big Bend for only three nights but managed two solid days of hiking. The trails were well marked and maintained. The views both during the day and of the night sky were spectacular. The park is vast.

We were booked for site 90 but were able to move to site 85. If you have an rv larger than a tear-drop camper, you will NOT be able to fit into site 90. No matter what Recreation.gov says or the pictures show, it is not doable. The camp ground was great though, lots of wild horses roaming through daily. Big Bend Park was awesome. Two must do's, Windows Trail and Santa Elena Canyon Trail down to the Rio Grande River. Night time star gazing is amazing as well.

The mesquite nettles in the grassed area made it difficult to pitch a tent. The loose livestock was kind of cute, but annoying as the horses grazed right next to our tents during the nights. The price of the campsite was especially good and even better with a Parks Pass.
