Feral donkeys screaming all night. Three of them nearly trampled my tent. Multiple insane donkeys racing through campsites all night long was not in my big bend bingo card.

Wonderful five days even though extremely, unseasonably warm. Beautiful campground though at the southern end of the park, we were still able to cover the whole park, visiting the majority of the sites and hiking many of the trails. The only problem is the abundance of livestock, crossing the river from Mexico to graze the campground and deposit an ABUNDANCE of droppings. If it wasn’t for the absolutely wonderful camp hosts who daily (sometimes twice a day) voluntarily (not in their job description) muck out the campground of cow, horse, javalina and donkey dung. If they didn’t there would be no place to pitch a tent. Almost like being in a stockyard.

Has running water for toilets, trailer hookups, dedicated dishwashing sinks. The campgrounds have hosts on duty for assistance. Really close to a super easy nature trail that’s a great morning walk overlooking the Rio Grande. The campground has wild horses, wild cows, and wild javelinas roaming regularly so you need to have food secured, but each campsite has large bear boxes included.

We stayed for 4 nights at Rio Grande Village in early April. We booked a bit late so we had to move twice, but that was OK; we have a motorhome and it is easy to switch sites. The good news is that we were able to experience both generator and non-generator site areas in the campground that had no hookups. The sites are very roomy and many have quite a bit of shade from trees and/or covers. We had 3 lovely sites, each with unique advantages. The hosts were particularly attentive and did a good job of keeping generator usage within the time limits as well as making sure everyone was following other rules. Other than some temperature and wind extremes we could have done without, we had a lovely stay and really enjoyed the park.

Avoid spring break, if possible. The park destinations were much less crowded Monday and Tuesday than the previous weekend. Santa Elena canyon was beautiful. The historical preservations are educational and interesting as well as the presentation at the Pine Junction visitors center.

A fantastic campground! The accessible site was great for our son in a wheelchair. We loved the trail up the hill right from the campground. We also loved the ranger program in the Amphitheatre!

Nice, well maintained park. Some sites are permitted to use generators, others nearby aren’t permitted to use them but can clearly hear them. I prefer limited hours for all sites.
The volunteer led geographical walk is worth the time.

Absolutely loved the animals and large, clean sites. Our camp host was amazing and so friendly and went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. I’ve done lots of camping in Texas state parks and in every campground the staff are always miserable and on a mission to catch you doing something wrong. She made this such a different experience and I am so grateful!

Campground was well cared for with all amenities available. Pleased to find out there were no vault toilets and ample fresh water available.
