Although we had a short, overnight stay, we had a fabulous time. The trail to the overlook and Rio Grande are short and relatively easy, and the views are well worth it. Be prepared for lots of biting insects- cover as much of your skin as possible with clothes and use lots of bug spray- even so, expect some bites. Also be aware that wildlife is very active in this campground; we saw several javelina and were kept awake most of the night by wild horses (we didn’t mind that too much- it was a very cool experience). The night sky is unbeatable.

Area was great. Refreshing. Always reenergizing to be out there with nature. Unplugged. Off grid.

The campsite was great with a structure over the table that provided shade. The area is imposing. Bring your binoculars and telescope.

Spacious campsites and many with good shade. Lots of animals to spot; everything from deer and javelinas to vermillion flycatchers and cicadas.
However, the unfenced and adjacent ranch land means there is lots of donkey, horse, and cow manure all over the campground - and there was plenty at our site. Donkeys roamed the campground for several hours one night and two were wearing bells, so between the clanging and the braying of the donkeys, it wasn’t terribly restful.
Village store is well stocked, has working WiFi, and the store/gas station is the only place in the park where you can add air to your tires.

This was my second visit to Big Bend, first time was 5 years ago when I camped at Chisos Basin campground for a week full of awe and wonder how much Nature's marvel could affect how much simpler lifestyle can bring much fuller meaning and happiness and peace surrounded by creatures coexisting in harmony.
This second camping experience was spent at Rio Grande Village and once again I have the grateful feeling for having an exceptional opportunity to be among roaming animals unmindful of humans just simply living on Nature's bounty without showing aggressive behavior, donkeys, horses, javelinas, and different types of birds were such natural means to amuse our souls and with their cacophony of sounds complimenting the night sky is far more healing and soothing than anything else in my opinion.
The scenic drives along marvelous mountains never fails to make me wonder how much beauty they provide in endless ways depending on time of day, their magnificence captivated in real time cannot exactly be captured by my camera lens but are mostly embedded in my memories .
Lastly, I have the time and means to indulge myself, spend camping without having to restrict how many days since this lifestyle I'm having as retirement life after existing for over three decades working hard providing for families hadn't been able to get much out of life's other than stressful things, thus even at older age , venturing out into Nature and road trips are more rewarding for well being.
Camping lifestyle brings out how we cope with nature's habitat in harmony and teaches us how to adapt to changes and embrace ,accept our experiences with positive mindset and outcomes.
Recommendations, savor each day, every encounter with other creatures, animals , birds, plants, fellow campers and changing weather, and experience the awesome night sky in total darkness, drive all scenic trails in different times of days when possible for countless panoramic views .
Happiness is our mindset on Nature's life.

Campsite 42 was an incredible choice! We had a huge amount of space for: enjoying a bbq-sponsored dinner, parking our car and setting-up the tent. This site had a decent amount of grass, and as it was surrounded by trees really gave us a fair amount of shade both during the evening and during the morning.
The area is pretty safe, and I would recommend to everybody walking around, (specially during the night) to enjoy the solitude of star-gazing by your own.
The campground ambassador came to introduce himself a few minutes after our arrival, and was very nice to talk to!
Be aware of the presence of wildlife in the area, and of some farm animals roaming directly from Mexico. We really enjoyed watching them all.

The campgrounds are well maintained including the individual sites, public areas and bathrooms. So quiet and beautiful. The staff were all so helpful. We’ll definitely be back.

Great campground. Park representative very friendly, professional and knowledgeable. Originally hesitant about location at one end of park, but, in the end, the location actually worked out perfectly for my wife and me. Would easily and readily recommend to anyone. Definitely recommend the Boquilas (SP?) canyon hike and the Borillas (SP?) border crossing.
