What Guests Are Saying
Double Lake Recreation Area is a beautiful and clean park set in a tranquil wooded environment, ideal for hiking and biking. Campers appreciate the friendly and helpful hosts, well-maintained sites, and clean restrooms. While some facilities need updates and there's limited fishing due to lily pads, the overall experience is positive, making it a popular getaway spot close to Houston.

Camped with 10,8 and 5 year old in tent. Great spot and campsites are very wooded, which is nice for some privacy. Wood and ice was available and manager was friendly. will go again!

I dont know how exactly to rate this place. It was relatively clean, although there was not soap in the bathrooms. The fire pits were pretty picked up, but definitely not cleaned out. There is a trail that goes around the "lake" but it is in serious need of repair. There is no way you could get a wheel chair or scooter on the trail. The lake seemed very low, and would be very difficult to fish out of and I am sure my kids wouldnt want to swim in it. From what we heard, the management company is leaving January 1st, and it seems like they have kind of given up on maintaining the place. The cost is higher than what you would pay for a state park, and so for that I would not hesitate to just go to Huntsville State Park if you are in the area and looking for a spot to camp.

Beautiful area. We have visited for many years and love the beauty and quiet Facilities are quite old and dated. Wish more funds were available for repairs. Will be back again

Campsite 019 is surrounded by tall trees. The driveway holds about 3 cars. There is a handy 6' wood post to hang a lantern. Also, there is a flattened rectangular area that fit two large tents.
The fire pit ring is taller than average. Therefore, it is best to sit on a folding chair rather than a short backpacking chair to catch the heat.
If you are facing 019 from the road then 021 is nearby on the left. The nearest campsite to the right is far away. Behind you is 020 which has a great panoramic water view of Double Lake. The bathroom is a few hundred yards north up the road. It has a heated, push button shower. There's plenty of toilet paper but no soap anywhere.
Recommend hiking on the secluded Lone Star Hiking Trail. It is a 92 mile trail which exits the park so be prepared to double back! We saw deer on the trail and other locations near the lake.
We visited on a very rainy weekend. Thanks to the sandiness of the campsite, drainage was very good and muddy shoes weren't an issue.

Best kept camping secret in Texas. Beautiful private camping areas, peacefully quiet park with gorgeous views and trails. I've been going for 45 years and although I've camped in many places, Double Lakes is still my fave. Craig and the other camp hosts are amazingly kind and helpful. Craig has taken such great care of this park for years and he makes sure everyone is safe and well taken care of.

This has always been our favorite campsite from when we tent camped until purchasing our RV over a year ago. We love the heavily wooded campsites and the trails. A bathroom has been shut down for several years. We have enjoyed the walk out sites option until they became risky to secure on a last minute basis so almost feel maybe open them up for rental also.
