What Guests Are Saying
The campground at Spruces in Big Cottonwood Canyon offers beautiful scenery, friendly staff, and well-maintained sites, making it a popular choice for campers. Many visitors appreciate the peaceful atmosphere, great hiking options, and clean facilities, despite some complaints about the restroom situation and water availability. While there have been issues with locked bathrooms and high traffic on weekends, overall experiences highlight the campground's charm and natural beauty.

Surrounded by trees, huge space that felt like a 3 tier oasis, VERY CLEAN!!! The main road is about 800yrds away but the trees drown out some of the sound. Pull through site accommodates F150 4door (6’ bed) and 27’ travel trailer (and room for small 2nd vehicle). Quiet place with no issues. There are some bathroom buildings for those that don’t have that luxury and we didn’t even know they were there until we were leaving, again very clean place. Cool breeze surrounded by trees in a gravity canyon. At night you can even listen to the river. This is a “water shed” area so no furbabies aloud.
Will DEFINITELY come back!

We were in site #62. We were very happy to be in the mountains, however, the site was a little disappointing. I'd rate it 3.5 stars. That site in particular was really spread out, didn't have much shade (useful shade), was missing the grills (fine, but should be noted). I will not choose that site in the future.
I will say though that there was a nice area across the road from us that would be great for hammocks but it wasn't technically part of our site so I wouldn't have felt comfortable leaving things there overnight.
There was a restroom near ish. The cell coverage was great.
I appreciated that we were able to park four cars on our site without issue. They said we'd only be allowed two but since we paid the extra and had the room on our pad, the camp hosts didn't seem to mind.

BEAUTIFUL campground, but not sure who the camp hosts are. There were several college aged girls that were rude, ignored concerns, etc. We rented group site 1 and after that moved to group site 22 and 23. While in group site, the day use had VERY loud karaoke music on big amplified speakers. We literally couldn't hear each other talking at the tables. After an hour of this we went and talked to gal in the front shack she said "they can be as loud as they want". We've been camping here for 15 years we know amplified music isn't allowed she disagreed. Very irritating. We finall talked to group and they turned it down a bit and thank goodness left at 10. Bathrooms were dirtier than we've ever seen them. Always had to and garbage emptied but just dirty toilets, sinks, doors needed wiped down, etc. We have just been spoiled over the years with clean bathrooms, awesome hosts and quiet and well maintained grounds. Just felt different this year.

Very nice location in the woods. Campsite had a nice mix of feeling remote and alone while still being close to bathrooms and other facilities.
Bathrooms need modernisation.

We love the Spruces. Sadly, we have noticed an consistent decline in the quality of the site accompanied by ever rising prices. We held our event last week (July 15). We found the condition of the facility to be deplorable. The first obvious problem was one serving table crushed into the ground and tilted 15-20 degrees. This was obviously unusable. The charcoal grill was also tilted and loose in the ground. How were we to cook our steaks?
The restroom roof (near Grp8) has been failing for many years. Shingles are curled up and the sheathing is visible.
There is dead stump in the middle of the path between Grp7 and the restroom. Instead of removing the stump and patching the path, someone used yellow paint to MARK the outline of the stump, leaving the trip hazard in place.
One bench at Grp7 was broken last year. Instead of repairing it properly, the broken piece was simply cut off.
The tables have not been maintained at all anytime this century. They are LONG overdue for paint.
I would like to see some effort put into rehabilitating these neglected and crumbling facilities. We intend to return next year. I would like to find things in better condition than any of the last 20 years. You are charging premium prices. SOME of that revenue should be spent on maintenance!

Excellent site. A lot of shade from the tree clusters and the area is very pretty and green. The kids loved the parking lot where they had plenty of room ride their bikes and scooters. Nearby hikes for all ages. A true SLC Classic.

Great location, clean bathrooms and campsite. Close to Solitude ski resort where you can ride the chairlifts up the canyon and either ride back down or hike down. Unified Canyon patrol visible, keeping campground safe. Great experience.

It was a wonderful weekend for camping but our trip was cut short.
this was a great spot, but the FLIES. The BITING FLIES! We got up there at 5 to set up and they were such a nuisance DEET was no deterrent!!, as soon as the sun started setting and the fire got going, they quickly dissipated but as soon as the sun came up Saturday morning, they were back before we were out of the tent. We tried to make due and went up to donut falls to try to escape. They were up there too but definitely not as bad. When we returned back at 2, we tried to sit through it but came to the conclusion that we should just leave. My 2 young girls had enough and my husband was having a breakdown. We also brought by 2 year old who was the most unbothered but sat around as live bait.
