Marcus Island Campground

When we arrived, someone was parked in our reserved campsite. They had no reservations and we had to ask them to move. The next day, another camper stopped at our campsite and told us they had reserved that site. Recreation.gov had double booked that campsite; we both had confirmed reservations for the same site and dates. The campsite next to us had 4 trucks and a boat parked on the pad and road and the dumpster by them was used to dump fish guts. The campground was lovely. It was green, the wildflowers were in bloom and the area has recovered nicely from the controlled burn a few years ago. Unfortunately, the vetch is starting to take over a lot of the natural areas. There were lots of birds and we spotted an owl that was active in the area.

Beautiful campground! With no amenities except pit toilets, it seems to attract self sufficient campers who enjoy the solitude )minus a couple hours each morning of generators). Favorite campground and the fact that is now reservation only makes it more accessible for those outside of the immediate area.

Fellow campers in next site had an abundance of firewood and packed some over each night to ensure I had wood for a campfire. Great folks.
Marcus CiderFest was going on in town with a parade, many entertainers, vendors and classic car show. Freshly made cider was for sale and it was sure good.

Camped right next to the river ... wonderful view. Was off-season, mid-week - no one else close!!!

Not bad

Water was low. So lots of bugs. It would have been nice to know ahead of time the water would b low. Maybe updated pictures.

Understanding it was labor day weekend, we were patient. However, there was a lot more noise then I thought there would be and traffic by the camp spot. One big concern which the park service should address is that there was a camp spot at the end of the loop 2 that many people felt like was a "day use" parking spot and access. Thus, we had a lot of traffic and people were even coming into and making lots of noise running around right by our trailer at 5:30 in the morning bringing their families to fish! There also does not appear to be a camp host and also the campground has no gates to secure and shut it down at 10pm like other campgrounds in the area. Because of this we had a car drive within 5 to 10 ft from our camper at 3am in the morning and turn around and go out waking us up.

Other then that, the park was very nice and quiet most of the time. It is also very beautiful there. But they need to have some type of enforcement mechanism and someone watching over the park. They do not, and from a security standpoint, especially if there is very few people in the park when you are there which can be common, it is a concern. Especially when wanting to leave your trailer to go anywhere while staying there because of security aspects and no eyes watching.

Stayed in site 19 at the end. Overall a very nice campsite that we could launch our kayaks from. The road from the highway made for or a nice daily walk. On weekends there were a lot of late night drive bys . Some were probably bored teenagers, but others were people staying the night for free. Other than that it was a nice campground.
