What Guests Are Saying
Sulphur Campground is praised for its beautiful location by a creek, cleanliness, and well-maintained facilities, with friendly hosts and abundant wildlife, including moose sightings. However, some campers experienced issues with campsite sizes, unavailability of hosts for firewood, and a lack of water during their visit. Overall, it’s considered a lovely spot for camping, with great hiking and fishing opportunities.

The vault toilets were very clean. The Group site was awesome and away from the crowd. And a friendly herd of moose greeted us each morning. I loved my camping trip.

Beautiful area. Loved waking up to moose every morning. 6 to about 8 am the moose can be found all over in the Campground and at the water

Campsite 3 was great - the Hayden Fork in our front yard. Special rave reviews to the camp host, Wally Peat, extremely helpful (lent me a tool), very friendly and his insistence on a dust-free speed limit made us happy campers. Note to rv campers, 9100’ elevation may affect your propane mode of refrigeration.

Our stay at Sulphur Campground was memorable and enjoyable. Our campground host Norman (Wally) Peat welcomed us and alerted us to the possibility of moose in our campsite. He was correct! One of the highlights of our trip was a morning visit from mama moose and her baby followed by a parade of three other moose including two yearling males. The campground is well kept and safe with an enforced speed limit of 5 mph. When asked, Wally suggested a wonderful hike to Bourbon Lake via the Whiskey Creek Trail that's located across the road from the campground. Somehow we forgot to bring coffee - Wally provided us with a morning supply and was able to suggest a store where we could buy more.
We loved the views and trails along the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway. My husband caught fish in Christmas Meadows. We tackled a tough hike along the Lowry Lakes Trail - big views, high mountain lakes, but a rocky trail with significant elevation gain. We had a wonderful getaway.

This campground is extremely busy and needs some work. The only access road in the campground is a single lane so cars are constantly trying to squeeze past one another. Many of the camp sites are very close to the road so dust and lack of privacy were issues. The hosts were fantastic and the only reason I’m rating it anything other than zero. All in all We were pretty disappointed, to the point that we left a day before our reservations expired.

The campground location, scenery and camp host are all great. But there was a serious reservation with with our campsite. I made reservations in January for 2 nights and added a 3 night in May to the same campsite. I verified my reservations on your website and printed them before we left on our trip. However when we arrived there was someone else's name on the campsite tag for 2 of the 3 days we had scheduled. But no one else had arrived besides us at the campsite yet. I talked with the camp host and showed him our printed reservations and he showed me his report that showed someone else 2 nights and us 1 night. But since we had our printed reservation and no one else had shown up yet at 4:00 he gave us the campsite. He told us he was having trouble with campsites being double booked. About 30 minutes later the other group showed up to camp in the campsite we were at. Needless to say the group was very upset and I would have been too. The camp host did have another less desirable campsite they were moved to for that night, but the group was so angry they left the next day and they gave the camp host severe chastising on their way out. This according to the camp host is not an isolated incident due to the double bookings. This was not the camp hosts fault since I myself saw the same report he was given and yet even when I returned home I check my Reacreation.gov account and it still showed my reservations accurately so I call Utah Recreation Co. they verified my reservations were accurate. This is a sad situation for the campers who had taken the time to plan to come and be disappointed and the camp host should not have to deal with a problem created by a reservation system malfunction. It left us feeling bad for both parties. I wish you could check into the cause of these circumstances to resolve the issue. We have reservations to camp for a few more days in July and August and we hope we do not experience this problem again.

We had a great stay! The stars were beautiful and so was the campground. It was well kept and we saw a lot of moose and other animals. It was a great location for hiking and climbing. Would definitely stay here again!
