Sheep Creek is a great campground in Kings Canyon. It has wonderfully majestic views of the canyon and you are close to the river. There are hikes for those that have a hunger to put some miles under their feet or for those that would like to walk to a view of a waterfall or meadow. Although we had to make concessions this year with some of the stores opening late or the showers not opening at all. Believe me when I say it is all worth it to be in such a beautiful setting and just experience nature. While you're there, let the rangers know that they're appreciated.

My campsite was much larger than expected. The weather was perfect. The hike to mist falls was great.

Utter lawlessness! This campground was as loud as a frat party at night. There was a very large group in camp that had a PA system with an MC on a microphone. They we so loud that the whole campground could hear the well into the night after quiet hours. We spent 2 nights here and never saw a park ranger drive through camp once.

Be sure to put everything in the bear box at night. Good proximity to the river, close to Roads End for multiple hiking options. Campground is pretty clean but we did pick up bits of debris - lots of bottle tops, scrapes of paper, some bits of plastic. Bathrooms were serviced daily so always had TP!! The kitchen sinks started running slow so be careful what you allow to drain when doing dishes. Don't let "stuff" go down the drain. We camped Monday-Friday so few other people were there. Really liked not having other campers right next door. Kings Canyon is spectacular! Be sure to stop in the pull outs along the drive to take in the view.

Map of campground was unavailable so was unable to determine where site was located in campground. Would have preferred a different location. Booking and confirmation went well.

This was my 3rd visit to the Sheep Creek campground.
My previous visits were excellent, and as far as the campground itself goes this was no different.
The huge problem with this visit was the lack of rangers to enforce the campground rules, which lead to a rather disappointing experience where on one site (!) a group of no less than 20 people settled (max is supposed to be 6) with multiple huge tents and proceeded to run a generator well into the night (past midnight) in order to run the amplifiers, huge speakers and lighting system for a full blown party with a DJ blaring into his microphone every couple minutes.
This is the kind of stuff that you can expect in some small regional campgrounds, rude people that the rules don't seem to apply to, but in some 20 years that I've been camping in the NPS campground I HAVE NEVER ran into anything remotely close to this.
It was completely unacceptable and unfortunately was not shut down by the rangers who seem to be understaffed (budget? Covid? who knows..).
This was a terribly disappointing experience which I hope to never repeat.
Hopefully someone at SeKi picks this up and sends more rangers to make sure the campgrounds aren't turning into a war zone at night.

Sheep Creek is a wonderful campground along the Kings River that has wide camping spots and many trees which provide ample shade during the heat of the day. The restrooms are maintained and there are both recycle and trash dumpsters. One can rinse their dishes at the large sinks provided outside of the bathrooms. Just remember, no cell service so you will be using pay phones at the ranger station or general store to make phone calls, plan longer stays. My family has camped at Sheep Creek since the early 1990's and not much has changed in the way of Kings Canyon. It is like an untouched time warp, much different than its sister park to the north. Thank you rangers and staff.

This is our 56th year of coming to Camp 1/Sheep Creek in Cedar Grove. I will admit that I was confused about the online reservation process, but once I figured it out, easy! I just can’t find 1 negative thing to say; this place is so special to us. We had the opportunity to participate in the Campfire Talk on Friday, 8/27. I will say that the Ranger-in-charge was exceptional and the program was one of the best we have seen. On a personal note, with my was my 93-year-old mother and my 3-week-9old granddaughter on her first (of many!) camping trip. The family tradition continues!

.Tire Chains may be required at any time. Be prepared at any time of year for a wide range of temperatures and weather conditions. Check Road Conditions at nps.gov/seki. Vehicles longer than 22 feet (including trailers) are not advised between Potwisha Campground and the Giant Forest Museum. Dangerous Rivers! Many drowning victims were playing near rivers. Rivers present a far greater danger than lakes or pools. Surfaces may look calm, but strong currents often run below. Be cautious walking near rivers as rocks can be slippery. Getting out of a cold, swift river is often impossible. Falling Objects - Don't linger under dead, cracked, or broken branches. Run if you hear cracks or snapping from tree roots, trunks, or branches (know that sometimes there is no sound, and very little time to react). Report falling branches or trees to a ranger. A California state fishing license is required to fish in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, and Sequoia National Forest lakes and streams. Fishing licenses may be available at National Park and National Forest markets. |
