Sunset Campground (CA)

This camp site was perfect! The water spigot was right beside it and the bathrooms are very close. The site has a large slope so we were worried about where we would put our tent but we walked up the slope and to the right was a nice flat spot by the tree where people obviously set their tent up. An 8’x8’ tent fit perfectly, could probably get away with another foot either way. This site is also pretty separated from the other camp sites which was so nice since a lot of them are very close together. There are also large rocks that are fun for kids to climb on at the top of the slope. Will 100% book this exact site again!

We were at campsite 40 and I could not recommend this spot more! Amazing views of the sunset and cool spots to explore around the site. If you are looking for a good day hike I recommend the Great Lakes Trail to Lake Heather. A bit of a drive to the trailhead (about 50 minutes) but I promise the views were worth it!

I camped in site 19. It is at the edge of the campground and up on a granite slope. The table and firepit are right next to the parking spot and do not have much shade. The small tent site is up the slope and is fairly private and secluded. The Sunset Trail runs behind this site and is a convenient way to get to the North Grove and General Store areas of the park. In late Aug. 2023 I did not have to contend with many bugs, including mosquitoes. The flush toilets are pretty clean and worked well during my stay. There is water right at the corner of this campsite.

Beautiful Forest but the camp sites are sooo tiny and very close together, this campsite seems to be frequented by people who’s idea of camping is to sneak 3 times more people than the site is supposed to have, bring AS MUCH of your stuff that you possibly can and make noise all night long. This is supposed to be bear county and I saw half a dozen CAMP SHOWER TENTS set up, people dumping the food filled water from coolers on the ground, guys urinating in the middle on camp sites. EVERYTHING you could imagine being wrong with a campsite, this is it. Saw a ranger drive by while a guy saw urinating 10 feet from the road and NOTHING from the ranger, just kept driving. Do the same when looking for a good place to camp, just keep driving. Clearly all these five stars review are from the people bringing ALL their stuff, so they can party in the woods. And shame on the Park Service for allowing all this to happen. But still a beautiful place to visit.

We actually stayed at the same site last summer and loved it so much we were stoked to learn it was available when we were going to be there this year. It has a flat surface for our tent and the grill grate over the fire ring and picnic table made for great meals each evening as we enjoyed the beautiful painted sky during the sunset. The Sunset Trail trailhead is just a short walk from camp as is Grants Grove and Grants Village. Sunset Campground makes a great home base for exploring the abundance of trails and nature in Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks!
